Haha well I’m glad I could help! It was my first time so I’m sure I could have done some stuff different but it’s the experience that matters!

The mantle looks nice. I’m about to build one myself the only things I’m going to do different is 45 the outside edges for a cleaner look and put a French cleat on the back instead of screwing it down. But nice job.

The measurement on the "tag" of 1x8 is referring to the pre-milled dimensions of the lumber - once it's milled to have better finished sides it gets cut down to 3/4x7 1/4, etc.

That’s good to know! This whole time I just thought the lumber industry was pulling a fast one on us lol

I'm thinking about hinging the top of the mantel from the inside and hiding my cable box and modem in there I'll let you know if it turns out cool ....great vids by the way Im starting my fireplace tomorrow

That’s such a good idea! Just remember that most remotes work using infrared light signals so if your modem and or cable box uses an infrared remote then chances are, if it’s inside your mantle, it may not work! Just try putting your cable box behind something solid and see if the remote works! I’m excited for you and your project!
