Nicely done Andy. The French polish is quite interesting. A couple things I would add -- when sanding, after sanding in forward and reverse, stop the lathe and sand along the grain to get rid of the circular marks -- that really helps get a good finish. If I want something really shiny, I'll sand up to 600 grit. After applying sanding sealer and using abrasive paste, I like using UBeaut Shellawax -- it really gives a nice finish that is quite durable.

Hi Andy, I usually sand to 400 grit, a coat of sanding sealer and when dry de-nib with 0000 steel wool, then Yorkshire abrasive paste and finaly a beeswax finish, I end up with a very smooth satin finish, if I want a brighter shine, instead of the final coat of bedswax I use Carnuba wax to give a hard and bright finish. I have also had good results with friction polish.

Hi Andy, I have never had a good finish using this and watching your video has explained why. I'm getting heat into the piece. I'll try it again using your method and let you know. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Thanks for the demonstration in real time. Sometimes that’s the best way to go when teaching a technique. I think I’ve made all the mistakes one can when it comes to friction polishing. I’ve put the finish on too heavy, too light, too many coats, too little pressure on the rag, too much pressure, etc. As usual, I appreciate your matter-of-fact methodology. Happy turning!

I think I could see the overhead light reflected in the piece become brighter and sharper. Makes me want to reach out and feel the finish! 😄

Hi Andy - great video! I do pretty much the same as you but after i sand the piece and before I use abrasive paste I use a very light application of sanding sealer. I either use the Chestnut cellulose sealer which I dilute 50/50 with cellulose thinners, or Zinzners which is that famous shellac based sanding sealer. If you use either of these sanding sealers before your abrasive paste, you will get a really high gloss finish, especially if you finish with a wax polish such as microcrystalline. I also find that if I apply the final wax coat and leave for a few hours before buffing I seem to get much better results. Anyway mate, good to see you - hope you're doing great!

👍🏻 Agree 100%. I do the same thing. Sometimes I forget to put on the sanding sealer and the shine is definitely not as good.

I’ve found Howard’s Feed N Wax to work very well. It leaves a very smooth finish and brings out the grain beautifully.

If one wants a nice, soft, satin finish, Howard's Feed N Wax is an excellent choice.

I followed your basic instructions for making the polishing paste and also the wax. Both are harder than yours appears. Assuming different grades or types of wax might make it harder. Should I remelt and add more mineral oil so its softer?

Hi Jamie... My abrasive paste is ok but my wood wax is a bit on the hard side... Yes... just re-melt and add some mineral oil until you get the right consistency ... You may have to add more scented oil at the end as the melting burns it off... Take care my friend and all the best from Andy

Hi Andy. Nice explanation. I’ve never used French polish, but I’ve been experimenting lately with a combination of beeswax, carnuba wax (very little or it’s hard as a rock), boiled linseed oil and mineral oil. The ratios is the tricky part and I’m not sure I have it right yet but it leaves a very shiny and quite hard finish as a final polish. Otherwise I use a shellac of some sort before the abrasive paste and then the polish wax. I’ve also been playing with wet sanding using a mineral oil and shellac combination to help fill in porous wood and tiny cracks. Cheers,Rick
