This is very helpful! I especially like how the woman speaks very clearly and distinctly so the learner can hear the sounds exactly, and then the man speaks more naturally, as one would hear it "on the street." I think it's always important for beginners to hear both versions. I also like the language you have chosen to include. Well done!

Actually if you can speak English (which you can obviously) it shouldn't be that hard for you to learn German too. Based on the fact that English is a Germanic language (together with influences from Greek, Latin) many words and constructions are similar, like Boot = boat, Land = land and so on.

Frank The fact that english is a germanic language doesn't mean that is a lot of similar. They both have some similarities but those similarities are not enought for getting the lenguage. You will need much more than those similarities. My mother lenguage is spanish and in my opinion it has lot of similarities with german(both latin roots) except vocabulary of course! constructions are similar in spanish too but construction is not the problem of german.
@frank4579
10 жыл бұрын
There are lots of similarities in the vocabulary. Just a few examples: Word = Wort, Boat = Boot, Land = Land, Arm = Arm, Bear = Bär and so on and so on. The TH actually is coming from the Greek δ (delta) spoken like the TH in English and used in (for example) that. And this "that" is in some region of Germany also used like "dat". German uses some Latin words, but it is not a Romanic language, it also has a strong Greek root, like Spanish. Anyway I am glad Spanish has lots of similarities with German, because I started to learn Spanish. ;)

Yeah, as someone that speaks English I find most of the basic words easy to learn. It's the really long ones that are hard to fit into a sentence without twisting your tongue. There's consonants in some longer words that aren't pronounced but as an English born speaker, my brain tells me to speak all of them. Training your brain to not want to pronounce words as they look is the hard part.

After listening to this German lesson a second time I noticed a rather subtle difference in the speech patterns of these two very delightful young presenters: The young man speaks sentences with the proper word emphasis. The young lady is reciting words in a fairly uniform manner. Moreover, the former speaks the sentences in a more fluent way which, in fact, gives more meaning to the statement.

because you want to describe how you feel and not what you are. There is probably not much logic in it but only a language tradition but if you would say: Ich bin warm. I can see why native English speakers have problem with German. The over simplified English language does not gives you enough ground to learn over it. In this case people like me from small countries who are not native English speakers, but know English, because it's everywhere, have it much easier when learning language like German.

Well I speak Spanish as a native language English as a second one and as a third language french and I can say that over simplified form for English speaker might be a barrier but I am not one of them and I will tell you German is something completely different from languages I know and I'm still having problems with it, sounds grammar are different and it has certain things that don't made sense like the articles but despite all of it I'm learning it cause i find it interesting but you must accept that is a difficult language.

Nugroho Erlambang You can't speak German by just repeating phrases. At least that's my definition of "being able to speak a language". It requires a certain understanding of the basic grammar imo. So I would rather use "say" in your context like "I can say some German phrases now". I'm not trying to offend you or something, I just want to let you know about my definition of language which could be completely different from your definition of course.

+和ァ独 I say German. Wouldn't it be understood as 'I say the word German.'? There is really no reason to judge Nugroho for what he has wrote. In fact your opinion as honest as it's meant to be, can be considered as demotivating to learn the German language.
@WaaDoku

Tobias Schwarz I edited my comment, sorry I didn't give an example of how I meant it. I thought more of a sentence like "I can say some German phrases." or "I know some German phrases". Somewhere in that range. Haha ok, I'm sorry if I made you feel like that, I actually want to achieve the opposite but thanks for letting me now.^^ I just wanted to distinguish between those who are actually interested in German culture and language and who are willing to dive deeper into it and those who boast about being able to speak German when the really only know a few words and phrases. There's a difference, that's all I was trying to say. So please everyone, keep on leaning German! It's a beautiful language! (^ω^)
