I use a sear grate on my Traeger and max out temp. Works surprisingly good! I think Traeger have their own (modifire). I use one made of cast iron from Lodge.

excellent indirect cooking, the real problem (and mine is personal advice) is that searing must absolutely NOT be done on a direct flame as it not only creates too many burnt parts but generates many carcinogenic substances, not to mention that the barbecue you used due to the searing it was already very dirty! I hope you take my comment as constructive advice.

Technically the FDA considers any browning done to the meat at a high temp to be cancerous but at the same time generally speaking there’s no real way to evaluate whether any cancer that a person may end up with was actually caused by burnt or browned meat as there’s no real way to determine how much of the crispy goodness a person ate prior to said cancer. So in the end I’d be more worried about too much of an acrid flavor before I worried about cancer from a steak cooked over a dirty flame. That view on it btw is based on my own personal research and is supported by Cancer Research UK during their study on bowel cancer
