"Easy Oil Painting" is a good book for learning how to paint realistic still life paintings. All of the demo paintings in the book are 4x4 inches and the reference photos are the same size. This is helpful for beginners who aren't totally confident with their drawing skills.
The step by step instructions makes it easier and more relaxing to paint because someone has already made many of the decisions for me: what to paint, the colors to use, and so on. It's a really good way for a beginner to get started.
Each painting gets more difficult as you progress through the book so start with the egg painting if you're a beginner and work your way through the book.
You can paint at a larger size if you wish. My demo painting is 8x8 which makes it easier to film and I also feel as though it's easier to paint larger. That's because you don't have to cram in so much detail in such a small space.
I thought the clear gesso was a good idea too. I have used it before but I never used it for painting on with water mixable oils and I liked the subtle texture it gave the Gessobord.
In the book she mentions being inspired by a painting by Francisco de Zurbarán at the National Gallery in London, below is a link to the painting.
