I've done a lot of last minute cutting board engravings for wedding gifts. People will go by Ollie's (a clearance store) and get one of those 9" x 12" boards and I can put the name on it in about 20 minutes. It's definitely a quick turnover rate. I should go to Ollie's and buy up a bunch of them to have ready.

Great idea! Last July I got a slab of wood that came from a tree trunk, from hobby lobby, I made a ring holder for my Goddaughter and fiance/husband. I put their full names, then 2 strips of rectangles 1 under each name and then roto zipped those rectangles out for their rings to sit in. I am putting a hole or hanger on the back side so it can be hung up and a forever keepsake. I've never seen another one like it. The last name is Paris so the A in the name was the Eiffel tower. It turned out amazing! This is just for anyone wanting to personalize stuff for wedding, anniversary, etc.

You should try the lasermatic by Roly. Theirs comes with honeycomb bed, full enclosure with exhaust and fully assembled. You’re up and running in 10 minutes and it’s $1399. Cheaper better and has the same power. You can also get an upgrade to 30w if you want. Comes with the rotary tool as well. It basically is all in one where with xtool you gotta pay to have the extras like the enclosure and honeycomb bed. Plus Roly has it all setup out of the box. You take off one or two shipping reinforcement and then it’s good to go.

I haven't tried that type of leather, and the thing I would worry about is the hair catching fire. Thanks so much. This was completely untreated. Run it at a very low speed, make sure the surface is free of oils, and you're good to go. You have a 20w?

Can you share the settings for the pizza spatula thing? Was it a 20w diode?
@VoeltnerWoodworking

Yes, this was a 20w diode from xTool. I'll have to look for the settings for this one, but best thing to do is get a second piece of similar material and run some material tests. I usually run material tests and keep them for future reference.

Is there some kind of adapter to etch glass? Specifically glencairn whisky glasses
@VoeltnerWoodworking
Жыл бұрын
The RA2 rotary works with all sorts of cylindrical objects including the oddly shaped glencairn glasses. Should work great. You’ll want to use a dark tempura paint or something as a marking agent to absorb the light.

If you can afford the S1 I would recommend that 100% mostly because of the safety and ease of use. The additional features like curved surfaces and conveyor attachments are great too.

If you’re working in an open space it’s not terrible, but they do make a cover for it. I didn’t use the cover for this video because it doesn’t make for great video content but would help eliminate fumes.

Do you have a fee chart on how to charge for stuff
@VoeltnerWoodworking
9 ай бұрын
I don't because it really depends on a lot of factors. The best thing to do is compare prices among places like Etsy, FB marketplace, etc. Based on your equipment and how long it takes you to complete something you can adjust from there. If I batch produce things I will generally have those products lower than one-of-a-kind type projects and those that take a long time to complete. If your machine is slower than industry standard, unfortunately you can't charge more because it takes you longer. If a set of coasters costs $3 in materials and you can design/engrave in 30 minutes versus another machine that takes 10 minutes, you shouldn't charge more. If the average for a custom set of coasters sells for $25 on Etsy then you should charge around that price. What you lose in time, by something taking longer to complete, you pay for by learning. Think of it like paying to attend a class where you're the teacher. LOL! Next time you'll complete it a bit faster and learn better ways to do it. I hope this helps!

@@VoeltnerWoodworking imagine needing to make multiple windows for a building with similar images, with some center image changes but majority of fill is the same. Cutting by hand would be beyond difficult, could pay for a 40 watt machine on first job compared to a commercial contract shipped from out of state! I am strongly considering getting a laser to cut and image plywood. Wonder how much more it would cost to upgrade to do limited side huddle glass cutting and etchings?

Hi, I have been wanting to buy a laser engraver and cutter for plexiglass. This would be a new journey for me. Is there a small machine you recommend for someone who has never done this before?
@VoeltnerWoodworking
Жыл бұрын
You’ll want to make sure it’s laser-friendly acrylic, and I would recommend a CO2 laser if you want to do clear acrylic. Both OMTech and XTool have CO2 lasers I would recommend. I have discount codes for both sites too. It depends on the size of the material you’d want to cut/etch on the machine I would recommend.

Increase power and lower speed to get darker engraving. It’s always good to do some samples for different materials to know which settings are best for each type of material. Hope that helps. 👍

While I greatly appreciate 98% of the 'content' and conceptual ideas... there is one HUGE thing MISSING: TIME - how long does EACH OF THOSE engravings take? I understand there are variables of 'power' and 'speed' (of laser) - but how long did EACH OF THE engravings did you spend on EACH ITEM?? From the 'design' to the actual engraving? Those facts & points are 1000% MORE IMPORTANT for educated decisions. Also, what does a person need to consider for their SAFETY - eye & fingers - in particular.
@VoeltnerWoodworking
Жыл бұрын
I actually took the time per unit out of the final edit because it didn't flow well. Each of the engravings took between 8-15 minutes. As far as safety, that is a topic of a future video actually; this video needed to stay on topic and is made as a general consideration of the various TYPES of projects people can make with this machine. These videos take a lot of time, so I like to break them up into topics instead of a comprehensive review because people generally come for one thing or another. Judging by retention across my videos, including it in this video would have been a fail. I have the safety video coming out next. Thanks for your thoughts, and I hope you'll take a look at the next video when it comes out. Cheers.

If you're working 12-24 hours a day at the laser you may need a more powerful unit and probably not buying pieces to engrave from Hobby Lobby. LOL! I will typically start the machine and prep the next piece or work on something else around the shop while it's running, so you gotta be efficient. I have a 130w CO2 machine that I use for high volume projects, but that's not what this video was about.
