Dekopon are also known as Shiranui the citrus nurseries here in the states just refer to them as Shiranui in case people want to find them to buy. I have two young trees I bought last year and even though they are still young they are constantly blooming and trying to set fruit even indoors for me in zone 6.

John, could you do a thorough tour of the greenhouse set-up? It looked interesting.

I've been on a waiting list for a Shiranui tree from a central California grower. For many months now. I got impatient and took a chance at one sold on Etsy. I'm hoping the DNA is good.

I just picked up a 15 gallon shiranui in Sac. Definitely look around, alot of good nurseries will have some in stock.

@WebSurfingIsMyPastime I bought 1 shiranui and 1 golden nugget from that large citrus grower. It came to my home in beautiful condition despite it being delivered upside-down. Shirinui was $70 , with a 3/8 inch diameter stalk. Yours sound like a better buy...oh well.

@@Usercarobsmk I paid a lot more for mine, yours was definitely the better deal. That grower always pushes golden nugget, but I haven’t found golden nugget to be worth the time and effort. Check if they have Shasta gold or Tahoe gold in stock, way better than gold nugget. If I were you I’d return the gold nugget and get a Tahoe/Shasta gold instead

@WebSurfingIsMyPastime I think I'm stuck with the gold nugget... but last season I bought and ate a bunch of them and thought they were very tasty. For me , a good balance of sweet and tartness. I bought 2 different mulberry to plant for the first time also. I'm liking gardening these days.

Sumo Citrus is actually an unauthorized cultivar of Dekopon from Japan. It was probably first cultivated in Korea without permission, and then a US company obtained it and cultivated it without permission. The fact that it uses a name related to Japan suggests that they knew that it was a cultivar invented in Japan and cultivated without permission. It is exported to various countries, but no royalties are paid to Japan.

I mean, you cant compare it when you left one in the fridge forever. I buy them at the store and most are dry at the top and a bit too sour but they are still good for citrus you can get in Indiana. I plan to grow one in a pot but it may not be that good or even survive. Not everyone can afford to heat a greenhouse to get fruits like this. I think it's almost too hard to do citrus unless you are in Cali or Florida.

Are y'all sure that is a tangerine? It looks large and has the basic tangelo shape. Honeybell (Minneola tangelo) only old and warty.

That’s just how the dekopon/shiranui/sumo tangerine looks. Very similar shape, but different color compared to a minneola.
