Yes I think so too. I don’t think it’s their fault. The food system is very different than it used to be. What do you think makes people so disconnected?

@@heavenisahomestead3164 There are too many processed food in the market and slaughtering process are hidden from the public in the name of "mental health". And sometimes it's just because school don't teach us. One day my sister's friend who lived just around 10 km from my house (even still in the same town) saw my neighbor drying rice (with husk still intact) under the sun and he had no idea what are those.

Awesome explanation! There’s such a disconnect between us and our food when we just see it wrapped in plastic in the refrigerator section. To the average American, chicken is chicken, but it’s so much more than that.

If you’re smart, you get a dual purpose like a red or buff.

@jessehansen10 I really want to do that in the future. How long to they take to get up to processing weight?
@jessehansen10

Since they’re layers mainly, it takes 18 weeks untill they start laying. Best to raise em in the spring so by late fall you can get some good eggs before they slow down in the winter. You can harvest them around the same time, 18 weeks. I usually wait a year to fatten em up a bit.

@@jessehansen10 that’s great. Thank you! What’s your set up for like? I’ve always wanted electric poultry netting & a livestock guardian dog before I get a big dual-purpose flock.

@@heavenisahomestead3164 I live on about 15 acres, out in the national forest in Missouri. So I have a 1/4 acre fenced in for the birds. We have a lot of black vultures around here and chicken hawks so I can completely free range like I want to. I’m looking into a guardian dog myself. Good luck in the future for you. You’re welcome.

It's honestly sad how disconnected people are from where their food comes from. I can understand it being a little more difficult to butcher and eat something that you raised but at the same time I feel like that's something that if you're introduced to when you're young you're able to get past it a lot easier.

It is sad, but I’m not upset with people. Our food system is so broken & people trust that if it’s on grocery store shelves, it’s safe. The reason I started raising meat chickens years ago is because I told myself if I couldn’t kill them myself, I needed to be a vegetarian. I didn’t want it to be “out of sight, out of mind.”

Generally, yes. Once a hen stops laying, that's about all they're good for resource wise. Yes it's brutal, but these are specifically livestock, not pets.

@azuresky4961 ours haven’t ever gotten old enough. We’ve had predators come through and they usually get the oldest, slowest birds. But I’ve heard people say “they’re for eggs, it’s not a retirement home” so 🤷🏼♀️😅
