Anything older than 1995 is now an “antique” and now has untold high value. The fact that nobody knows what it is, cares what it is, nor has any money to buy it even if they did just doesn’t matter to the seller. The fact that even if your “antique” does happen to sell on eBay, your only going to keep about $40.00 out of that $400.00 after paying taxes and eBay fees, plus you have to box it up, drag it to the Post Office, overpay for shipping just to have it lost or destroyed before getting to the buyer, so you have to deal with angry buyers, bad feedback, and more contact with the Postal Service. I gave up on selling on eBay a long time ago. Mr. Man will end up selling his item for nearly nothing ... if not dumpster-ing it ... when his overprice antique shop goes “belly up” and he has to scramble to clear his store building before the next month’s rent come due.

eBay really frustrates me these days as it's made getting a good deal on things I do for my hobbies almost non existent. I like to collect older car radios, I can go to the junk yard and get a basic Delco AM/FM cassette player for $30. Yet I go on eBay and people want upwards of $200 for them. Same goes for computer stuff. I see drives and boards listed as not tested, as is, or broken for $100 or more. eBay has made thrifting less fun as thrift stores like to price off eBay and if there is a good deal, all the flippers get their hands on the stuff and drive the market prices up higher ruining it for us fellow hobbiests.

Bought a Hudson 332 record player from an Ebayer for $5.00. But it will cost me $22 to get it. It is a good deal parts wise or to fix up but that kind of deal is getting rarer and rarer now a days.

I think the part of that problem too is the ignorance of some of the Ebay sellers themselves, now don't get me wrong, most half of the sellers do price things fairly or in alignment with the items condition, but there more of a buyers beware thing with Ebay to consider first with used stuff, since unlike a junk yard, the nearby Goodwill, or a thrift shop, where the people that are doing the pricing and selling are trained clerks and employees, Ebay sellers are mostly themselves at home, meaning you may get the odd ones who money and business skills are a little on the lousy side, and price stuff too high then it worth, sometimes i see things that stay unsold or unbidded on Ebay for years, just because they priced it too high.
@beefchicken

@@KenKen-ui4ny the overpriced stuff that sits for years is deliberate. They’re waiting for that one desperate guy that needs it now. Maybe it’s a prop company looking for a specific model because they filmed half a movie and then accidentally dropped their old TV down a flight of stairs. I see it all the time with industrial listings, stuff that was filling dumpsters 30 years ago, listed on eBay for hundreds of dollars now. They’re waiting for that one desperate customer. That plant operator that has a critical system that needs a circuit board for a system that runs a critical piece of machinery. And you’re off the mark on the level of skill of the average thrift shop employee. They’re the ones that have no idea what they’re doing. The professional eBay sellers have it figured out. That’s why they have a junker record player lites for $450.

Boy, Brother Stair is everywhere. I sometimes think he took over all the transmitters of the old Radio Moscow!!! Great video, Bryan. It is always a thrill to me to see an old radio come to life. My first exposure to short wave was with a Knight Star Roamer. Someone who had gone into the air force gave it to me. I spent many hours by its side listening to stations from all over the world. Used to get into trouble having it on at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. Even tried to read by the dial lamp.

Another excellent radio repair video. Bryan does a great job explaining why he does what he is messing with to get it to work as good as it can be. Now he can sell it for $350! Don't forget to mention the repair video here in the listing!

Ebay pretty much sucks...anything listed as vintage automatically adds 50.00 - 100.00 bucks to the price. I am running out of places to shop...good thing I am getting old.

The people asking eBay “buy it never” prices on local sales are very quickly going to find out that nobody wants to pay those prices. The market regulates itself. No point getting worked up over the wishful thinkers on eBay. They’ve always been there.

People have been scalping prices on e bay for a long time. Look at records, for example. Before the so called vinyl resurgence you could buy used albums for the most part fair prices. But now since records are in fashion again people are selling scratched up records for just as much as a new copy. Also when a limited edition comes out scalpers will buy them up and sell them for ungodly prices.

When patching up those old cones, I use an acrylic gel medium that dries flexible and clear, and I find that using rolling papers applied from the back with the acrylic as a patch helps make a bit stronger and cleaner repair. It can be used on the front too, if looks aren't a big deal. It works fine for smaller speakers, but I wouldn't recommend trying to fix a bigger speaker that way :)

I’m happy to see another meissner product. I have one of their 1947 record cutters, and I wanted to see what other products the company made. But, for reasons beyond me, I can’t find things online that should come up in a simple google search. Same thing happened when I was trying to find out more about Utah Detrola after finding a model 7000 record changer that they made in ‘46.

Back in 1977 my dad bought a hi fi record player from somebody for $15. It was definitely from the 1950s. I'm thinking it was maybe 1955 to 1959. I think it was a General Electric and it had tubes It also had all four speeds. I never knew what it was called to hold the records level on the stack when they were on the spindle but that was made of metal on that one and would get ahocked when I touched it. I remember moving in 1978 and didn't get shocked in the new house with it. I'll bet if I flipped the plug around in the old house I wouldn't have gotten shocked. I remember how good it sounded though.

People are greedy and in a way, you can really blame them. They're just too ignorant on the situation that when you are selling on ebay, you are selling into a nationwide or even international market where people accustomed to much higher prices and who live in areas where both prices and salaries are higher than your area, are bidding.

As for eBay prices you must go into Refine Search and go to Completed Listings and Sold Items. In this way you can see what an item sold for and how many bids. You can usually see the listing so you can review the offer and what condition it was listed. Those are the numbers that count. God Bless

That record player you have there, Bryan is in beautiful condition. The only thing I can think of as to why these record players are destroyed, rather than sold, is liability. The school would say, if we let these go for sale and someone gets a shock of one then it will come back on us. Other than that, I can't see why everything is trashed, it's a terrible waste for those like yourselves.

I think the obsession with making sure items are destroyed rather than recycled is a liability issue, if you find something in the trash, technically it still belongs to the people throwing it away, you pick it up and are electrocuted or hurt, you can sue the owner of that item for damages. My place threw out many electronic audio and video items, working vcrs and multiplexers and monitors all got trashed, because it belonged to my company and did not want anyone benefiting from these items. Instead they were stacked in a 6’ stack and shrink wrapped, and sent to a recycling company. Not that I wanted this stuff, but it was kind of a shame to see good stuff go to scrap.

And then you got to deal with the scammers on eBay at turn around and say that the thing didn't work and it worked when you sent it to them and if I had it for a few days and they ripped things out of it and put it in one that they had already and sent it back to you when a different circuit board in it and this way you are covered and you don't have to worry about any of this so much of a hassle dealing with eBay that you're better off not dealing with them because they never ever take the side of the cellar for you to get anywhere you have to jump through so many hoops and then they put your money on hold until you can prove that you were right
