Wow, I found a classic Clive video! Also wow! How much our beloved Clive has changed over the years! I have a similar lamp bought from our local Wilco store about six years ago. I've never taken it apart, but it doesn't often see the light of day - I find the melee of coloured light traces really messes up my eye sight, and "does me nut in".

The high power LEDs don't really have a focal length as such.. They're just points of light under a clear dome. You can slow down the motor by tapping it across different positions in the series circuit of LEDs. Slowest point (2.5V) is across the red LED.

I have something identical to this that I paid £11 for... I wanted ambient lighting in my game room but it spins so fast I think I'm going to have a seizure whenever I look at the telly. Any idea how to slow it down? Or is my only choice to cut the motor?
@ThePillenwerfer

I got one of these earlier today. The dome turns very easily by hand, not clicks, and this causes the blue LED to light up, but not the red or green ones.

It probably has the motor tapped across the blue LED. If you turned it a bit faster in the other direction the red and green might glow.

I bought one on amazon for 8 dollars+ free shipping and its great!! It made mu ordinary music studio room into a pro studio atmosphere wise lol. Ok it reminds me of a cheap bar band light show,but for you tube video s of me playing guitar in my studio its ideal.I would even use one if playing a small gig (much better than having to buy lights,stands, chase controllers.etc...)

You can now get these in Poundworld stores (for a pound, naturally), have sneakily replaced the old man's living room light bulbs. Now we wait.... :)

Hi Clive, not sure if you saw my comment on your discussion forum, but i was wondering what the specs are of the driver? i have a couple of these that have stopped working, so was wondering i could get a replacement driver from somewhere (seems a shame to throw the rest of it out).
@bigclivedotcom
8 жыл бұрын
+Stevie C It's a super common 3 x 1W LED drive module found in lots of GU10 LED lamps. If you were in the UK you could buy a Poundland LED GU10 (with the three 1W LEDs) just for the driver.
@steviecandtheplace2b
8 жыл бұрын
i've seen those on ebay, although their quoted voltage is usually more than the 8V you say the 3 LEDs need... and again, seems a bit of a waste of the rest of the GU10 lamp :P
@bigclivedotcom

+Stevie C They're current regulated. The open circuit voltage goes up to around 12V but as soon as you connect them to LEDs and the current is limited to 350mA the voltage drops to match the combined LED forward voltage.

yeah... they are sold white label. if you rotate the lens by hand, the motor generates power and the LEDs work.

I recently bought a Christmas tree topper with essentially one of these inside of it. I haven't any idea what happened, but after only an hour of use the dome stopped rotating. Went back and exchanged it for another one, stopped rotating again (this time in under 10 minutes). I'd really like to bust it open to see what in blazes is getting stuck, but I'm probably better off just getting a refund.

Thanks for the teardown. Do you know if the motor reverses with reversed polarity?
@bigclivedotcom

It looks like a conventional DC motor, so I guess you could hack some circuitry in to give the traditional back and forth motion of a traditional moonflower. But there are some really neat LED moonflower effects available that either emulate rotation by chasing LEDs behind a large lens or actually rotate panels of LEDs behind a lens.

Has it been forced round? It might have a damaged gearbox. Another possibility is that one of the motor wires has popped off the PCB.

buy different LEDs like that and desolder the old ones and replace them with the newly bought ones.
@PunakiviAddikti
8 жыл бұрын
You can but you'll need to buy new leds that absolutely have to match the current and voltage of the old ones and if you're new to soldering you'll also need to buy a soldering iron and solder plus preferably a desoldering pump or solder wick.
@DrTune
8 жыл бұрын
It's pretty easy; just get some 1W LEDs off ebay in your preferred colors, the current/voltage really isn't very critical as these are underdriven anyway. Soldering job is trivial, go for it. Don't get little teeny leds tho, get 1W ones
@PunakiviAddikti
8 жыл бұрын
Dr Tune You're right, actually the specs are not critical. If you get the 5mm or 3mm leds and try to stick them in though they will die in a blink, so they must be 1W LEDs. Luckily they are pretty easy to distinguish. I boght a 6W USB soldering iron (I have a soldering station so I don't use it primarily) for portable soldering on travels. It works great, Bigclive made a video about one. I bought mine off Banggood, and though there are many products to choose from, they are all the same thing. Heats up in 10 seconds and can handle MOSFETs and other beefy components. It is ideal for a quick solder job like this and only cost 6 dollars. Watch the video before ordering to make sure you know what it looks like.

Do you think it's possible to (easily) change the RGB-LEDS for white-LEDS. I need this mechanism for an art-project but these bulbs only come in RGB.. Hope so.. Thanks for the teardown.. now I at least know the cap is easily removable.. :P
@bigclivedotcom
10 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not. The white LEDs are widely available on ebay as "1W LED beads". The only thing I couldn't vouch for is how easy it would be to remove the existing ones from the original PCB. When installing new ones, make sure that you at least use some heatsink compound behind them and that the polarity is correct. Also note that the white LEDs may look a bit less "sharp" as they have a layer of phosphor on them that diffuses the pinpoint of light a bit. You can already get larger disco style lights that have a large rotating dome with white LEDs inside. www.getinthemix.com/dj-lighting/qtx-light-3w-white-led-fireball-light_1.htm?gclid=CKOwqMSZlb8CFQsEwwodj0cAsQ

Yeah I saw those big disco lights but this small lightbulb would be just perfect. Its for a art project and a big turning head would ruin the view. It would be even better if they look less sharp so in theory this should be fine. Thanks!

A friend bought one of these from Cyberdog. The lens rubbed on the body and wouldn't rotate properly. Then upon turning it off and back on again it made a loud bang and tripped the 30A fuse in the fuse box... Took it back for a replacement and Cyberdog said they try another one in their light-fitting to check it works first, immediately blew a fuse in their light fitting too! These things may look pretty but seems from the comments here that they're not very reliable. To Cyberdog's credit they then gave a full cash refund and a voucher to say sorry for the inconvenience.

I got one of these, the thing is poorly engineered. The lens had excess flashing which rubbed the case. The motor is loose, crooked and the screws couldn't tighten it up. The motor is also very loud and the LED's don't color cycle or anything. Since the case is extremely fat, it won't fit in many sockets unless there's generous clearance Its barely worth the $5.00.

+Paul Taylor Did anyone try to turn it by hand? It may have a stripped cogwheel inside, since they are made of very soft plastic. Other than that it may be something as simple as the motor wire popping off a connection.

It could either be something as simple as a wire off or a faulty power supply. It's the same miniature power supply as is used in most 3W GU10 style lamps. You could explore inside it as shown in the video to see if a wire has popped off, but be aware that mains voltage is present when in a live socket. Other than that it's cheap enough to buy a complete replacement.
