In May of 2006 Roger Ebert appeared at the George Eastman House here in Rochester to receive an honorary scholarship award. I had always wanted to meet him and tell him how his writing made an impact on me. I viewed movies and then life differently partly because of him. Sadly, I had to pass on going because of life and job commitments. There'll be another time, I thought, since were talking about GEH. Who could have possibly guessed what would have happened a month later? I write this to express my gratitude to a great man who rightfully earned his Pulitzer. To this day it's difficult setting his books down.

Roger Ebert had a really good philosophy of giving a film a recommendation (or a 3 star review) if he felt the film was good for it's target audience within the genre, even if he didn't think it was totally right for him. As for Curious George, I think he was right to give it thumbs up with a disclaimer. Films are subjective, and strictly children's films are a genre in their own right. I think Roeper simply didn't want to confuse people because animation has truly become an all encompassing genre for all ages.

They taped a whole bunch of shows to cover the 6 weeks he was doing surgery and actually, the last actual show where he reviewed something had a leftover review of Clerks 2, a re-review of Monster House, and then they showed clips of them reviewing some of the recent films, like Superman Returns. Final shot was Richard signing off for the show. Two years later, same shot with him leaving the show with Michael Phillips watching. Ebert should've come back for that last clip. I did miss Roger being on the show, but Richard still kept it going for 2 more years and he and Michael had chemistry. The Disney fucks destroyed this show. After Richard left, it only lasted 2 more years. I knew it wasn't going to work.

Roeper was being kinda thick did the Curious George. Of course Ebert is right: you review movies based on the audience that's actually being marketed towards, not based on who's watching their show lol. I don't get Roeper's thumbs-down to Curious George when he straight up admits it's good for its target audience. He gave a thumbs-up to The Devil's Rejects for precisely the same reason on the far opposite end of the scale--it wasn't for everybody but for what it was trying to do, he felt it worked. No, Curious George isn't for everyone just like The Devil's Rejects isn't for everyone (in vastly different ways), but that doesn't mean you can't recommend the movie.

Curious George wasn't a good kids movie and even though Roeper isn't a big fan of gore horror genre he acknowledged it was good for that genre. Also he isn't negative on the devils rejects at all whereas you can tell he thinks Curious george is just generic kid shit.

IMDB has Superman Returns as the last episode with his name as host on it. However, it then has two episodes in July called "The Worst of the Year... In August, the rotating guest hosts start, according to IMDB, with Jay Leno first and Kevin Smith the week after that. Then a bunch of people I've never heard of.

I had a discussion with my Grandma about the Curious George review a few years ago. (Today is 8/21/23, so maybe 5-6 years ago?) I'm with Roger on it, it's a cute movie for kids. I wouldn't mind seeing it over and over with kids if I had to. Would *I* see it over and over by myself? Not really. I love animated movies, but that's not one I'd pick for myself on a regular basis. But is it good for kids? Absolutely. My Grandma took Richard's side. She's never seen it but agreed that she would have no interest in seeing an animated movie about a monkey, but it would be good for kids. Like Ebert said, it's a semantic argument. They're both right. It's a good movie for kids, not one for adults. The Departed is a great movie from the same year. Richard said it was 2006's best movie and the best of the decade. Is The Departed a great movie? Yes. Is it for kids? NO WAY. Should Richard have given The Departed a bad review because it's not for everyone? Of course not. Just as The Departed works as a crime drama for adults, Curious George works as a movie for children. That's why I side with Roger Ebert here. Curious George is a kid's movie, and as one, it succeeds. :)
