I’m not a full fledged wood worker, but I believe this is dying wood and not ebonizing it. Don’t get me wrong, it looks awesome, but I don’t think this is the correct process.

This looks gorgeous. Do you have any photos of the finished product dried?

For all of the people that say this is not ebonizing, not true. Ebonizing is making wood look like ebony, which she did. Quite well actually.

Hi I'm a woodworker and you are wrong. True ebonizing involves using the natural tannins in the wood to darken. For example true ebonizing turns blonde oak into black. This is just cutting a dye with denatured alcohol for easier penetration.

That’s not ebonized. Ebonizing is intended to replicate the very dark, virtually solid black of ebony, not to accentuate the figure. Also, that foam brush and the short stokes left a bunch of bubbles in the finish.

I've found that going slow and steady as possible with the foam brush eliminates all bubbling and makes it lay damn near like glass.

Make a supper strong tea solution and apply two coats before the iron acetate.

This requires tannins in the wood. Tannins are mostly present in oak so this does not work well with woods like maple and birch. You can apply tea to the wood to introduce tannins, switch to oak, or use dye, stain, or carbon ink (india ink).

I intend to try this method out on some curly maple that I recently purchased, which has some excellent figure in the wood. Is the type of dye which you used critical to the process? Or would Trans-tint dyes or General Finishes water based dyes work equally well in your opinion?
