Newly restored EBT 16 returns steam to the East Broad top Railroad for the first time since 2011.
In 2011, we were heartbroken to hear that the East Broad Top was stopping service and closing.
We had never visited but was always on our list when we were young. The best-preserved narrow gauge steam railroad in the east was a legend in our family.
This was our first time at the East Broad Top, and it did not disappoint. We joined throngs of Railfans to celebrate, document the occasion, and support the railroad.
Undoubtedly we will be back to see more of the great things the EBT is working on.
East Broad Top #16 is a 3' gauge 2-8-2 Mikado type locomotive built in 1916 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and was purchased by EBT the same year where it was one of the railroad's largest engines. It and #17 were the main power used in the waning years of the railroad but was stored in 1956 when the railroad first shut down and was not used at all during EBT's tourist years since it was generally regarded as bigger than necessary for tourist operations. When East Broad Top announced in 2020 that it would be reopening again after shuttering in 2011, #16 was selected as the best candidate for restoration. The restoration was completed in 2023 and seen here are its first revenue runs for the railroad in 67 years.
