Porcupine is the most ambitious post-punk album ever undertaken. God's Will Be Gods, Clay, Heads Will Roll, Porcupine, HIGHER HELL - these are masterpieces.

Couldn't agree more. It's one of my all time favorite albums and my favorite from Echo. Listen to the full album and then repeat over and over. Youll be swept up in its exotic mystery and scope. ...Hypnotic to some extent.

I don’t know about “most ambitious post punk album ever undertaken”… that’s quite a bold statement, but it’s definitely an amazing accomplishment, and from all accounts it was an extremely difficult album to make. The results were/are spectacular though, and it has held up magnificently over the years. I’ve been listening to it ever since it was hot off the press, and often times it still manages to leave me winded. All four of the first four albums are absolutely incredible, but to me Porcupine was the pinnacle of that astounding run of albums. The crown jewel. It never loses its edge. Just a truly amazing album.

I thought they eclipsed U2 with their early albums, but now Mac sings like a crooner. They had a fantastic drummer Pete De Freitas. I met him when I was 14 and then he was dead within a couple of years. What a shame.

Yep. They’ve held up beautifully over time too. Still sounds just as fresh and relevant today in 2024 as they did in the early/mid 80’s. After Ocean Rain the magic left. A few strong moments maybe, but really those first 4 albums are all anyone needs.

I wouldn't say pete is the most expert insane drummer but god what makes him so good and legendary is his groove. Not many drummers can rock that groove, just something about him.

Irreplaceable drummer. Pete was a one of a kind. Very powerful, very precise. The original lineup was one of those examples of perfect chemistry, even if there was often a lot of tension. Actually the tension was a major factor in why the chemistry worked so well. However I think that even if Pete had lived, it just wasn’t going to work out. By all accounts he had gotten pretty out there around the time of his death.

I think this might actually be my favorite Echo footage ever right here. It captures them at a moment when they were at the absolute peak of their powers. Especially Pete. Damn! As if his sticking wasn’t already impressive enough on Porcupine… he nails every single little beat, fill, and accent, just bang on the money… and then some. Incredible, one of a kind drummer he was. That whole period of 1979 through to ‘84 was so great. Very few bands have such a long, strong run like that with such consistency, but ‘83 was where the wave really crested… and here’s the evidence. I’m glad Mac and Will decided to carry on, and they still put on a fairly good gig even today, but the original lineup was just perfect, untouchable alchemy. They’ll never stand up to this period again. It was real magic.

Yeah, I’d say that 1983 was their peak year, even if it had been fraught with tension. I absolutely love all four of the first four albums, and have for 40+ years now, but to me Porcupine is the absolute apex of that incredible run of albums. Even today, all these years later, it’s still capable of blowing my mind and leaving me winded. Anyway, as you said… untouchable.

Heads Will Roll is one of my favourites. It's a great song! From an italian fan.
What an exciting and interesting performance. Ive loved the bunnies for a very long time but have only seen them live once. It was about 3 years ago and as much as I enjoyed the gig I couldn't help thinking that they were more like a tribute band than a proper writing songs, creating something new band. As a fan you want to hear the "classics" but you also want to know they are still trying to write something as exciting and new as this stuff. This is such a fantastic performance showing the true creativity and originality of the band.

What… that ridiculous, insipid place in Cleveland? The one that inducts acts that aren’t even remotely rock and roll, while completely ignoring many actual rock and roll legends? Nah… Mac and company don’t need the stink of that irrelevant institution on them. They’ve been in my own personal hall of fame since 1981.
