A side effect of the steel could have an effect on those inflicted with Lycanthopy. Maybe for the duration of the spell, all creatures inflicted with lycanthopy would act as if it was a fullt moon. Technically it's not a full moon but a new moon, however the moon is directly interacting with the sun's light in a very visible way so some sort of effect there would make sense. Additionally, for the creatures that are effected by sunlight, such as drow or vampires, the effect could be lessened or eliminated for the duration of the spell, allowing g ot to be used in some support cases. You could also make so that spells like sunbeam and moonbeam would be affected in some way, damage halved or doubled, or adv/disadv on saving throws

Cool idea, considering the recent celestial event on 4/8/2024! Okay, this is kind of a brainstorming session... Include an effect called "Omen" that causes mass hysteria (frightened cond. until the spell ends). Another effect could be "Entrall" that could embolden the party and allies. During the casting period (1d4 minutes), onlookers could see the sky starting to dim. Casting period could equal period of totality as well. Might need some rare spell component that the spell consumes so it's not a spell that can be spammed. Wisdom save vs caster's DC would also be pretty nasty as an 8th-level spell. Any who witness the caster performing this spell might consider them a god! Might also be cool to make this a rare artifact that can cause this spell. It might have belonged to a cult. Werewolves maybe lol?! 🤔

A couple of thoughts I had: 1) There should be some special interaction for, like, vampires or other sunlight-sensitive creatures. 2) When I experienced the 2017 totality, the temperature dropped very significantly during the event, so some sort of weather/cold damage thing could apply maybe? As for spell components, I'd like to offer the idea of a Tyrant ship. Soelljamming vessels are expensive as-is, and that type specifically both looks like a moon, and would be difficult/a quest in itself to acquire, since they're piloted by Beholders. Other thought: Spells like cloudkill lay out the speed at which the effect moves - would it be worthwhile to have an Eclipse spell have, essentially, a movement speed? Progressively worsening in an area until totality sweeps through, then gradually fading away? Also, a fun observation from the past, since I couldn't make it to this eclipse: during totality, the entire horizon is colored like sunset. I feel like you could do sime fun fey bargain-making with sunrise/sunset/twilight painting the northern or southern horizon.

having an effect on vampires and sunlight sensitives, I'm 100% behind. Having a weather/cold thing applies.. I'm not too sure on. Out temps here dropped about 10° today during the totality, but I didn't really notice it other than the sun wasn't basking on my face. I REALLY like the concept of a progressive effect then fading out.. I'm landlocked and couldn't see the horizon today, but I'm all for connecting it to some form of fey deal.. One thing I'll add... I've a feeling this is going to be a much more impactful spell by the time we are all done with it.. and I mean BIG...

A few things came to mind... like how incredibly powerful this spell is for an 8th or even a 9th level spells slot. For reference, a spell that cut off the top of the mountain, flipped it upside down and made it fly was a 10th level spell (Proctiv's Move Mountain) and we are talking about causing celestial events for an 8th level slot... but still... this would be more powerful than a 10th level spell slot just because of... 'shenanigans'. Material Component: The corpse of a virgin of a sapient species which has been dead for no more than 30 seconds prior to the initiation of casting. That's right, Aztec-y spells need Aztec-y materials! Regional Effects: Whoa boy am I going to exploit the hell out of this one because lets just say that the whole world is about to be subjugated... so many exploits that I can look you squarely in the eye and say "I am the DM now!" but I will only point out the big ones. Effect 1: Plants need sunlight, and while an eclipse's totality lasts 2-5 minutes the process can last 3+ hours meaning that for each casting the sunlight is reduced by 50% for the target area for at least an hour and a half. A party with a a sorcerer, wizard and druid all with a lvl 8 spell slot and a lvl 9 spell slot can cast this bad boy twice per day, meaning that together if cast in succession at appropriate times, they can essentially cripple the agricultural industry by murdering crops! Because for each casting you are going to limit the majority of sunlight getting to those crops for about an hour and a half! So with 3 casters than means you can block out the majority of sunlight for about 9 hours per day! Congratulations, the value of your own crops just SKYROCKETED! Effect 2: Coastal Devastation! In the cast that this isn't an illusion the caster is either manifesting a moon or controling the moon the which would have significant impacts on the tide. So, with multiple castors making use of this spell we are either going to add some new moons OR we are going to have the same moon go back and forth in front of the sun for a while. Suffice to say, we could be looking at coastal devastation caused by tsunamis. In addition to the first effect not only can you limit their ability to product food but now you can have anybody trying to trade with them (other than yourself) by way of ship get swept away in a goddamn tidal wave if you know what you are doing. Effect 3: Two players casting the spells simultaneously so the moons are close enough that they would be pulled together and collide would eject debris in all direction, including toward the planet they are on! Lets say about 10%-25% of the mass of each moon gets kick off as chunks into space and are now careening randomly through the galaxy. Given proximity, and the gravity of the planet you are on, maybe 1/1,000,000th of that is going to be bombarding the planet you are on. I hope you've got a good teleportation spell because in the coming days any in the coming weeks and months the planet you are on is going to be bombarded with 6.5-16 TRILLION tons of moon debris (assuming those moons are of similar size to our own). Some of this will likely enter the planets orbit further blocking out the sun and dramatically altering the worlds environment by reducing sunlight. Additionally, particularly large chunks not trapped in orbit will certainly be bombarding the planet, many of which, on their own, are capable of causing extinction level events! Very little is likely to survive as if the heat of impact doesn't kill something, the debris of the explosion probably will, and if not the subsequent centuries long winter and starvation caused by the utter devastation of every ecosystem on the planet will certainly kill them. So tell me, how much experience does the party get for killing everything on an entire planet? TL;DR: I am why people can't have nice things...

here is how I'm beginning to look at this.. this spell has the potential to be sooo powerful beyond simply disadvantage / advantage... I too was thinking VERY similar to along the lines of what you listed out in Effect 1 except... and this is where I can tie in the multiple schools from the video.. what if it takes a caster from each of those schools in order to cast it? So it can't be cast by just 1 individual alone, and can only be cast once per X amount of years. As to your answer for how much exp the party would get for killing everything on the planet.. none. They'd be dead too.

As I recall some actually required sacrificing characters with X levels of spell slots just to do some of them. If you want to make it lore friendly in current edition that would also be a solid foundation as a caster can't cast a spell over 9th level, but multiple casters CAN cast together to get the effects of higher level spells. Trust me, I have tried, looked for any work around to get a 10th level slot, but my gamebreaking efforts have proven futile here. I have wanted to cast Proctiv's Move Mountain for ages now... but alas. No building a flying city for me 😞

Figured i would throw my hat into the ring and give my take on this spell; Eclipse *9th-level Necromancy* Casting Time: 1 Hour Range: Unlimited Components: V, S, M (A shard of moonstone, and a Large Gemstone worth 5,000 gp) Duration: 24 Hours You target the nearest moon orbiting the Material Plane, and cause that moon to shift and blot out the sun, plunging the world into temporary darkness. The spell fails if there is no moon to target. This false eclipse empowers the undead, granting them all the following feature: (If they already have this or a similar feature the amount of HP the regain is increased by 10) Regeneration The Undead creature regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the undead creature takes radiant damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the undead creature's next turn. The undead creature dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate. Additionally, roll a d4 and consult the table below, the eclipse causes the regional effect rolled, that lasts for it's duration: Eclipse Regional Effect Table | D4 Result | Regional Effect | 1 | Temporal Flux Forward | 2 | Temporal Flux Backwards | 3 | Celestial Disruption | 4 | Weave Disruption Temporal Flux: The eclipse causes fluctuations in time within it's region. Depending on if the flux is forward or backwards, Time might either speed up or slow down; This would lead to strange phenomena such as plants growing or withering rapidly, or creatures aging or de-aging momentarily. This temporal instability also affects spellcasting, causing spells with a duration longer than instantaneous to have their durations doubled or halved according. Celestial Disruption: The magical energies of the Eclipse interfere with the connection between the material plane and the celestial realms. As a result, divine magic becomes unpredictable and unreliable in the affected area. Spells and abilities granted by deities require a DC 10 Concentration check to successfully use; and divine being struggle to communicate or manifest their powers effectivly; rendering the ability to prepare new spells via prayer ineffective. Weave Disruption: The eclipse has disrupted the planar connection to the weave momentarily. For the duration of the eclipse spells cast require 1 slot above their normal casting level; and 9th level spells become to taxing to cast. Additionally, magic items loose all charges and cannot regain charges for the duration of the eclipse. (Cleric Spells, Druid Spells, and Paladin Spells are unaffected by this effect)

I am a bit out of touch with modern D&D systems, but I would imagine animals and creatures of lesser intelligence could become berserked or catatonic from the effects. Maybe some sort of save check to prevent them going into such a state? Would it be two separate checks, or if you fail slightly you go berserk, attacking anything around you, friend or foe, and fail badly you go catatonic, freezing up and just shutting down mentally? That could be an interesting way to deal with say... a swarm of insects or a horde of animals.

The girl in Sandman Nightmare County vol. 1 cast a spell on someone at the end of that book. Quite interesting but any spells that I personally have experienced involves a symbolic party and D&D is usually not used by them. The dragon spirit can use D&D. That is the only time. In other words there exists a dragon in spirit form if you want to cast a spell using a D&D book. It is possible.

Playing in the 3.5 game, two things for me came up that I wish was in it that was in 5E... ...but just quickly, Absolutely agree with Magic Missile! My Artificer uses a Vanbrace on his left arm that shoots a CL9 Magic Missile spell... which is also holding 50 charges... 5d4+5 = X +1 (the +1 at the end is because I have the Eberron Feat "Attune Magic Item" for a +1 bonus to an Item I have and use regularly!) Anyway... Vicious Mockery and Witch Bolt! I cant believe they are ENTIRELY new from 5E! But, yep, not in 3.x at all... I wish they were, because VM would be great for our Bard's... But Witch Bolt? Aside from changing some of its factors to be inline with 3.x rules, the only thing I would change is its damage... "Chosen by the caster upon casting"... its ment to be a *WITCH*'s bolt, right? Well, a Witch would have Energy Substitution, so this Spell would be crafted WITH Energy Substitution in it... So Electricity, Cold, Fire, Acid, or Sonic. Still keep the Concentration Check factor, still keep all the rest of it... but it could be SOOO much kooler! Im actually gonna write it up and present the new version to the DM as a suggested spell to introduce into the game...because we dont get alot of Con Check focused spells, so that would be neat...plus... c'mon... a "Witch's Bolt"? Too kool! EDIT: Damnit, I forgot to say my idea on the Eclipse Spell... This would be even more interesting on a world with Multiple Moons, that manifest different Magics in the world... Krynn (Dragonlance) and Eberron (Eberron) most prominantly. With the Moon blocking the Sun, would the Magic associated with that Moon be stronger or weaker? In Eberron, the Moon of Rhaan is associated with Thelanis, and when the Moon is Prominant in the sky every 800 years, the Fey can come and go from Thelanis to Eberron at will... as Thelanis also promotes the Arcane School of Enchantment... do Enchantment spells weaken or Strengthen during an Eclipse of Rhaan?

That 25% chance is a horrible decision, give people a saving through there to avert their eyes. And the effect is also not fitting, I mean why should an eclipse blind the onlooker? Sure, 5th edition has nothing like the Dazed condition from 4th edition, maybe give them restrained for getting stuck starring at the celestial event. That would fit much better to the idea you propose the spell should have.

why should an eclipse blind the onlooker? Because.. that can happen (like, seriously, for real you can go blind staring up at the sun during an eclipse unless you are looking at it during the totality - but at any other point the sunlight can literally burn your retina and cause partial to full blindness that cannot be reversed).
