Great discussion guys. I just wanted to suggest something. When I was in Wyoming for 2017, the airports around my area (in totality) were closed and letting people come in and view the eclipse from there. Glendo, WY had like 75,000 visitors that day. It would be worthwhile to call some of the local airports in the areas that you might be considering just to see if they are doing the same. They could be charging admission, but it would be well worth it to have some options like this lined up in multiple areas ahead of time.

I just watched a workshop with both Fred (creator of EO) and Xavier (creator of Maestro for IOS) and Fred says that he is so short staffed to be able to provide efficient support for everyone, but he is still supporting the software and working on improvements.

If you have a comma separated text file, all you have to do is change the extension from .txt to .csv. However, if you have an error in the file it will become evident if that file is opened in something like Excel. Just don't save it as an Excel file (.xls).

Can anyone explain what the ClkErr field is supposed to tell me when I am using a GPS and when not using a GPS to rely on the PC time? I am confused about that.

What if you have a 20 stop ND1million not 16~ND100k filter, the chart only goes to ND5, i think this is ND6 possibly. I guess just reduce shutter speed even greater, maybe by 50% of ND5?

I have a question about the gps unit you referenced in the video towards the beginning and showed the link to buy on Amazon. Is this gps unit plug n play or is there any initial setup for it to run on the laptop with EO?

I recently bought an inexpensive GPS unit on amazon (not the one referenced in the video). there was minimal set-up - I had to download a piece of software, change one setting in the software (COM port) and that was it. I closed the software, launched EO, changed the hardware settings in EO to detect it and it seems to have found my current location just fine. On the day of the eclipse, I'll double check the GPS location and UTC time on my phone just to be extra sure.

I think N means it is NOT incremental, i.e. all the settings will be sent. If you want to only transmit the changed setting via USB the setting should be Y, i.e. it should BE incremental. What you said on the video is the opposite, so I think it should be corrected.

I do not want to screw up my entry of my latitude and longitude. I need to know how to precisely enter these: 30°8’9” north; 99°10’5” west. I can see that the left box are to enter the degrees but I’m not clear how to put my entries in the right box where or where not to put spaces where or where not to put a zero before a single digit. Can you help? Unfortunately, I’m not finding any contact info on their website.

In the right hand box you can just highlight everything that is there and enter 8 9 (for latitude) and 10 5 (for longitude) which will replace everything there. Then make sure the correct button for North and West.

That cable is made by Shoestring Astronomy. However, they are closed until after the eclipse.
