In this video I’ll introduce you to 3 passive design strategies to achieve indoor environmental quality for your home.
This is a tiny 2 bedroom project on a half plot of land.
A space is never too small, If maximized to its full potential.
1. Biophilic: design increases occupants connectivity to the natural environment creating an indoor outdoor loop. You do not loose the connection to nature while indoors.
2. Breeze blocks:
The primary purpose of breeze block is to allow breeze into the home area while giving the home owner some level of privacy
Breeze block fell off as a result of the introduction of airconditions. Today they are gradually creeping back in.
This is an important component of a building
Provides:
A durable sunscreen for shading
Filters hatch sunlight
Openness and closure: indoor outdoor feel
Security
Enhanced air circulation
The resurgence is as a result of their low cost (1 - 2cedi)
Low installation cost
Are environmentally friendly
3. Louvres:
Louvres just like breeze block fell out of style. However using Louvres allows maximized air flow.
Studies show that Louvres allow as high as 95% of air circulation as against sliders that only allow about 45%
Louvre panes can be regulated manually to control the amount of airflow as opposed to the sliding glass which is either open or shut.
4. The first component is the use of laterite, earth or bricks. The thermal mass of earth delays Heath flow through the building. Cast your mind back to the clay cooler pots our grand parents would store water in. Always fresh and cool wasnt it. Same principle applies to using laterite.
Provides:
Superior thermal mass
Temperature and noise control
Fire proof
Low maintenance
Eco friendly
The finished walls are typically thick (50-60cm) and have a sedimentary layered look due to the compaction of materials in layers during the construction process.
