Boiled Botanicals - a plant-based eco nature project ...
During the Covid-19 outbreak in Summer 2020, we were limited to our immediate surroundings and I'm lucky enough to live next to the River Clyde and the old woodlands by Bothwell Castle, south of Glasgow, Scotland.
Over the three years I've lived in this place, I've developed a strong relationship to this land + the trees, plants and river. Collecting the offerings from the ground post storm and harvesting a few leaves and flowers, with permission from the plants themselves, I set about working on some eco prints using Khadi cotton rag paper and a Moleskine watercolour sketchbook.
Each set involved boiling the pages for 3 hours and the first time I spontaneously added soy milk to the water, though I'm not sure this had any effect. The second batch, I used a mix of 50/50 water + vinegar sprayed on each page, and dipped the plant materials in a bath of water, with a couple of teaspoons of alum powder added.
I was inspired by Susan Brooks' book: Eco-Dyed Art Journals : amzn.to/3eRNa14*
This project was first broadcast as part of the additional inspiration for the Midsummer module of the Mandala Magic: ALIGNMENT art + journal program : www.juliegibbons.com/creative...
Music composed + performed live by Martin Gibbons:
