I know I have a decently robust system with the systxccuid01 thermostat set up with my carrier infinity system. However, we would like to add smart features like room sensors, automation, remote access, and overall monitoring usages, etc, through an app. It seems like this ecobee is the main option to replace my stat with for these features but perhaps I’d be losing some features in the process?

From an HVAC standpoint, ecobee is a basic 24vac thermostat. You have a communicating system. You can convert it to ecobee but you may need more wires, you will lose system alerts/alarms, and if you have modulating equipment you will dumb it down to staged equipment. You would probably be better off just upgrading to a newer version of the Infinity stat. All of the Infinity models from 2011 forward have the types of features you are asking for via Wi-Fi to an app.

@@joshelliott7178 Yeah, it is a lot less expensive to get a new stat bundled with a new mechanical system. If you are buying it stand-alone, that will not be as cost effective. You may just want to wait until you are ready to replace your equipment. The national average life span for condensing units is 15 years and furnaces are 18 years. Based on the model number of your wall control, you are probably getting toward the end of life of your mechanical system.

I have a Carrier furnace (model 59MN7) with a variable speed blower and ac unit (model 24ABB) along with an Infinity Control thermostat (four-wire setup). Will the Ecobee with voice control powered by Carrier (EB-STATE5CR-01) work my system without losing an functionality? One concern is that even this Ecobee Powered by Carrier will not allow for control over the variable speed blower. Would the standard Ecobee with voice control (model EB-STATE5-01) work with my system without compromising functionality? Thank you.
@TECTubefilms

Ecobee does not control fan speed. Every variable speed furnace handles its own fan speed control unrelated to ecobee. During a heating or cooling call, the fan speed would work the same with an ecobee or an Infinity. However, Infinity allows you the ability as a homeowner to manually take control of fan speed during the circulation mode, so you would lose that. You do also have a fully modulating gas valve on that furnace. If you connect an ecobee or other regular thermostat, you will essentially dumb your gas valve down to be a 2-stage. You don't want to do that. Infinity is far superior in its control algorithms compared to ecobee. Definitely do NOT downgrade from Infinity to ecobee.

@@TECTubefilms so effectively the new "powered by carrier" is a marketing gimick. Nothing has changed with the echobee and there is no imporoved communication to say infinity systems .... thats really dumb. not sure why they even bothered. @@olivergoss9957 This thermostat is a regular 24v thermostat and hence does not communicate with anything. It uses traditional Y, G, W, etc commands instead of a data communication cable like an Infinity stat would use. It is not a replacement for Infinity. For Carrier Infinity systems, you would use an Infinity stat. For regular Carrier systems, you could use ecobee Powered by Carrier stats.

@@olivergoss9957 To answer your other question, it is an ecobee stat that is custom branded as Carrier. Functionally it is not different than ecobee. Since Carrier owns part of ecobee, it makes sense they would partner.

the infinity control and ecobee are two entirely different tstats. the infinity control is a communicating control, that communicates with the furnace. the eco bee is a thermostat. look at it this way . Infinity is a access terminal, where you can control the carrier furnaces settings and operation. like having a seperate keyboard to operate your computer. the eco bee is just a thermostat. you will lose your ability to make setting adjustments from the infinity control. you can still make them from the furnace control board dipswitches, but much easier to do from control.

if I understand the below my Ecobee 5 makes my infinity system a 1stage system? does this damage or put extra wear on the system which could effect it over time. My install commented that even though the ecobee says it a 1-stage furnace (under advance settings) that the furnace will control the speeds to effectively heat and cool the house is that correct?
@TECTubefilms
3 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the stages of the gas valve? These do not have "speeds" which is why we are unclear on the question. Here are the scenarios: 1) If you wired a 1-stage thermostat... or you wired a 2-stage thermostat only using W1 and not W2... then the furnace will handle the staging. It will do this in a limited fashion. It will run low fire to start and then after XX number of minutes it will jump to 100% fire. For a modulating gas valve furnace, it WILL NOT MODULATE. It will select a firing rate to be "low fire" each time it runs and it will use that low fire, say 65% and 100%, but nothing in-between. 2) If you wired a 2-stage thermostat using W1 and W2, you are much better off. Now instead of using the time delay sequence of the furnace to go from low fire to 100%, it will do it based on the decision of the thermostat. And the thermostat knows the temp, the setpoint, and how fast it has been approaching that setpoint. The furnace, as described in #1 above, does not know any of that. A 2-stage thermostat is ALWAYS better control than a 1-stage stat. But it WILL NOT MODULATE a gas valve either. 3) The only way to modulate the gas valve... ramp it from 40 to 100%.., in 1% increments... up and down... for precise control is to not use a thermostat and to instead us the Infinity wall controller. Anyone who buys a modulating gas furnace and uses an ecobee, nest, Honeywell, or other standard thermostat is wasting their money. Either buy the correct control for the furnace or just buy a cheaper and less comfortable furnace.
@TECTubefilms

Or ae you talking about a variable speed fan in your furnace? If yes, the furnace will control the fan speed to achieve the desired airflow during all stages of heating or cooling. This will happen regardless of which control you choose (Infinity, ecobee, etc.). However, if you use the Infinity wall control, you will also be able to directly control your fan speed from the Infinity stat during fan-only recirculation mode. You cannot do this with a regular stat like ecobee. You will also get dirty filter alarms based on actual pressure measurements instead of just timer reminders. And numerous other functions.

In regards to extra wear on the system, yes it does. The more the gas valve or the fan are turned on/off by a standard thermostat, the more wear there will be. It is much better to use the Infinity control to ramp the heat up AND down instead of shutting it off. Think of it like your car. How long will your brakes and tires last if you alternate slamming the gas pedal down and then the brake in order to control speed? You are better off using the accelerator gently to slow speed up or slow down, and only completely stop when you have to.

Comfort Zone does not use a standard thermostat. It has communicating stats so it won’t work with ecobee or anything else. Comfort Zone II is 1997 technology (literally) so it is pre-Internet as far as HVAC is concerned. So here are the choices: 1) keep everything as is 2) keep the dampers but upgrade the furnace, the zone board, and wall stats to Carrier Infinity. This is a good option if your furnace is pushing towards 15 years old 3) switch to a Honeywell zone board, Honeywell actuators and ecobee stats. You can keep your furnace, the dampers (but not actuators), and damper wiring.

Do NOT connect the ABCD wires to an ecobee PEK or even to a thermostat. The ABCD wires are for data communication where-as a regular thermostat uses switches. If you want to wire a thermostat instead of an Infinity wall control, you have to use R, C, G, W1, W2, Y1, Y2 terminals instead of ABCD.
