Hi. Nice simple cabinet. I disagree with comments saying you need expensive power tools to make this. You just need a circular saw, an iron (for edge banding), glue, and melamine screws. I do have two comments, though. This comes from over 30 years of woodworking and cabinet making. Please remember to ALWAYS roll up your sleeves when using your table saw, router, etc. This is essential to shop safety. I saw at least one segment where you had your sleeves down to the wrists while using the table saw. The only other suggestion I have for others using a cleat system for hanging cabinets is to use 3/4 inch plywood for the mating cleats. It's much stronger than melamine. Thx.

I just discovered some very nice solid plank cupboards from the 1950s. One of them is just knocked together with little nails through the middle of all the planks and side walls, it looks like a grid with 6'' by 12'' cubicles/pigeonholes. It's awesome because it's so strong and so easy to make and durable. ... The other is the same but bigger, and a router has been used to prepare little slots in the longer planks to place all the support deviders. I love the idea of working with solid wood that can be nailed throught the middle into grids. So cool. Thanks for the video!

Great video Colin. I have made a lot of cupboards and cabinets so you brought out some great points. The support system you are using is called "French Cleet". Rather than spend a lot of money on pegboard and hooks, this system can be used to support your Tools and hardware by making bins and brackets. Just to let your viewers know about it. Regardless what it is called, it is a good system. It may not be for some people but others use it. Yes I agree it collects a lot of dust and chips, but so do shelves and piles of wood as well as other Tools. That is what wodworking is all about. A good filtering system does help take care of the dust. Thanks for your input. By the way I am not a "Yank". Prenniez soin de vous, M. 405.

Stapling MDF is an accepted method for fixed cabinets, but for better joints, Confirmat screws were designed to hold in MDF and are much more durable, especially in furniture and where the product will be subjected to stress loads. I've made numerous pieces of MDF-based furniture and cabinetry using Confirmat screws. Even after handling by commercial movers in a cross-country move, they continue to survive just fine. Even my mobile router table-cabinet is still holding up nicely after 5 years of rugged use. The downside of Confirmat screws is they are much slower and require more skill and attention to use, and are more difficult to conceal (hence the need for those little screw caps). For that reason, you rarely see Confirmat screws in less expensive furniture and cabinets. By the way, Colin, nice build. The edge bander and trimmer are just the ticket.

Well it is a good video but if you do not have that edge bander lying around, you can put the edging onto the rough side of the melamine. Place a soft cloth (thin like a handkerchief) place it over the edging on the melamine board (with the glue side onto the wood) and use a hot household iron (without a steam facility) to iron down the edging (melting the glue onto the wood). Then take the blade of a hand plane and cut the protruding edging (which is wider than the melamine) off. Follow that process up with a bit of sand paper to remove the sharpness of the edging that you have just cut off. Dave Stanton made a video explaining this in detail.

@lexboegen

You would have to use a specialty glue made just for melamine joinery. Regular PVA wood glue won't stick to melamine. I wouldn't trust the staples alone as having enough strength to support heavy shelf loads, but Colin seems to know what he's doing so I'm not going to second-guess him.

I've noticed in a couple videos, including this one, that you call the Melamine base material "MDF" when in fact it's actually particle board. While, as you already know, they have similar working properties and require similar fastening requirements, but they are manufactured much differently. james gray Understood! I realize the Melamine surface can be applied to multiple types of materials. The videos I am referring to were being made using particle board, or TFL, whichever you choose. I’m not totally new to woodworking, however many woodworker newbies watch these videos to learn from and my comments are such that it helps using the more industry-wide acceptable terms so they can learn the correct terms too. Again, I enjoy the videos and learn from them also. I was an Information Technology Instructor for more than 10 years and learned early on that it’s important to teach using correct terms so the students learn them up front and don’t get confused hearing 3-4 names for the same item.

Having your blade set properly will help reduce chopping too. If you have a zero clearance plate, that will help too. Panel saws specifically designed for manufactured boards have a scribe blade - a small, adjustable blade, rotating with the direction of cut - before the main blade, which cuts a shallow trench through the melamine surface, slightly inside the cut dimension, practically eliminating blowout. Additionally, selecting the best face of the board, come assembly, assures that any blemishes are not directly in the line of visibility. If you have two cabinets together, putting the scribed sides out, leaves two good faces in.
@markrowland5393

So, I had to admit, I'm a noob about woodworking, yet have seen like bazillion videos and feel like I know enough to start, but this step of laminating the sides of a shelves is a mystery to me. I know that the tradition way is to just glue that and rip the extra laminate using a router, I do wonder if there's another way, easier one, to do that. Thank you
