Very interesting discussion. I've been looking at a Canadian O&G company operating in Colombia, Parex Resources, and wondering about the potential political risk so this has helped greatly to understand the situation.

i've read an article that an investor can qualify for columbian citizenship in 1 year waiting period from countries in the carribean region instead of 5 years if using western countries. can you make a video about this.

If this applies it’s only for naturally born Caribbean citizens. Not naturalized ones.

What I miss from this video is how they withstand the comparison with Petrobras. The Brazilian company is better than EcoPetrol in every metric and is even more undervalued. The risk with EcoPetrol is that they might not return enough dividends, while Petrobras is the opposite, they have been returning all the profits into dividends, ideal for shareholders.

Good point, would have been good to discuss this since the stats that I glanced over for petrobas make it look more undervalued.

Am I reading this right, how is it possible that petrobas is giving a 75% dividend?

@@DavidS-ox3li I can tell you I got most of this dividend and it is crazy. They pay you a 10% dividend and a few days later you receive a similar payment again. Then you realize it wasn't 10% but 10%+9%. While you are still recovering from the celebrations, you see another payment announcement. Then you think it is referrer to the payment you have just received, but no. It is a new one in a couple of months. And again it comes in two parts, and then it is like another 20%. And they have announced a new dividend for next week! It is kind of surreal, but this is how companies should be. They are making a lot of money and returning it to the owners = investors.

I haven't researched EcoPetrol in detail yet, but did Petrobrasil - I've also lived in Brazil around half a year and grew to understand the political climate much more than I would have otherwise thought. Petrobras has been paying all its profits into dividends as the investor class, and company owners, understood that Bolsernaro may lose and with the opposition in power the company would likely get massacred. They'll likely continue as a result, not reinvested. I wouldn't say that's ideal for shareholders, especially due to the taxation policy PBR shares usually carry, particularly for international investors, which are worse than the company simply appreciating and reinvesting. There's no way I'd invest in the company - the lula crowd wants the company gutted through domestic subsidies, higher taxes, and potentially tariffs - and they're now in power, and that's with the stock barely off the recent highs before the election results came in. Lula has also stated he wants to reverse cost-cuts that are 'hurting brazillians' and get the company investing in more 'sustainable' (green) activities. The pricing mechanisms he has spoken about (and advisors) are with the explicit goal of detaching the selling price of PBR products from the international market and exchange rate fluctuations - in other words, potential price controls. I don't know if lula is all talk but will do nothing - but the thing is if he does any degree of what he says he'll ruin the company. Gustavo in Colombia has already largely proven to be a talker, and doesn't have nearly as much staying power as Lula does, nor as harsh of rhetoric or of supporters. Take that as you will - I'll be avoiding brasil, it's a mess - colombia has issues but not like brazil. Will look for an entry into EcoPetrol if I don't find any issues closer to the $9.50-$10 handle if it gets back there and all seems good.

@@greeneryfinancial Thanks, that is a good answer. But as the video mentions, people is discounting a worst case scenario about EcoPetrol (creating an investing opportunity) and you are describing a worst case scenario for Petrobras. Both countries have massive problems compared with more developed countries and that is why they have massive discounts. The fact the Brazilian company is larger (almost 4x the size of EcoPetrol) is probably an advantage too in a world needed of petrol outside of Russia. I am sure Lula government would be worst for the company, but probably not to that extend and they will have some limitations on the destructive measures (at the end of the day, this is a cash cow and they get 'free' money from the dividends too). One factor mentioned often is the fact Lula was imprisoned because of bribes related to Petrobras. Any smart politician would try to be as less as possible related with the company, and any dark scheme to get money from them (tariffs, massive infrastructure projects ("green")) will automatically remember the old corrupt days. Definitely we are speaking of dark companies with problems, away of feel good ESG investments and we are like comparing a sick person of cancer with a sick person of Alzheimer. Who is worst and who will live longer, depends on ugly factors we are trying to figure out.
