This motor is a piece of shit. I have one. It's garbage. Didn't know till after I purchased it. Essentially it's a design flaw nightmare. Timing Chain, PCV blockage, excessive blow by and high crank case pressure. Each 2.4L ecotech needs a complete over haul by the time it reaches 50K and every 50K might as well over haul it. Chevy Warranty does NOT cover design flaws period. And they always weasel out of law suits as a result. Just don't buy this garbage, and they'll stop producing it (hopefully) Sad, cause I was a chevy guy.

@hochhaul
6 жыл бұрын
These engines had timing chain problems when GM first switched over to direct injection. The fuel pump supplier had problems with the fuel line seals and they would leak gasoline into the engine oil. If the owner waits too long to change the oil, the thinned out gas causes the timing chain to wear (stretch). Timing chains are maintenance items and stretching is common to many manufacturers. Ford's Duratec and Ecoboost engines are famous for timing chain stretch. Nissan's V6's are known for timing chain stretch. Mazda too. Part of the problem is that modern engine oils don't have zinc additives any more, which were important to prevent friction wear on things like timing chains. And its not like engine issues don't happen to every manufacturer. Toyota has had problems oil consumption problems. Honda has had tons oil consumption problems at low mileage too.
@brianleeper5737
6 жыл бұрын
The limits on zinc additives only apply to oils in the 0W-20/0W-30 and 5W-20/5W-30 and 10W-30 weights. All other weights of oils do not have limits on the amount of zinc additives they contain. So the 15W-40 / 5W-40 / 0W-40 oils are allowed to contain more zinc and usually do. Most of the 40-weight oils are dual rated for both gasoline and diesel engines.

Exactly. All the people here that are so busy bashing GM are failing to realize that regular oil changes with good-quality synthetic oil can actually prevent many of these kinds of engine issues from occurring down the road. And if you look at the amount of varnish and build-up in this motor you can clearly see that regular oil changes with good synthetic oil weren't done on this car, and this certainly would have contributed to the timing chain issues.

My case in point, I have a 2004 Saab 9-3 which uses a Saab-modified Ecotec 2.0L turbo that I've had for 5 years, it has 130k miles on it and for as long as I've had it I've done oil changes every 5k miles with Castrol Edge 0W-40 full-synthetic oil and I've had no issues at all. The 2.4 Ecotec is actually a really good motor! It’s not hard to work on and can make really surprisingly high horsepower with the right combination of parts. He didn’t say what the mileage was but I bet it was pretty high!

I open mines and my timing chain was perfectly fine ! But there’s a rattling sounds so where is it coming from ?? And also the car also dies here and there and once I turn my AC on it dies! Help Me out what is it ! I keep getting the crankshaft code and oxygen code but I changed my crankshaft twice !

Williamson Regis could be the timing chain guide rattling..also the Ac compressor is probably seized causing the engine to stall

What? Will a broken chain guide cause timing chain defects, so that it'll need to be replaced as well? Or do you renew the chain - since you're there?
@Brownnproud91

Peter Riis once you have the fron engine cover open, its best to change everything from tensioners ,chain,guides..
@Peter_Riis_DK

Thanks, Joe. but that doesn't really answer the question. :)
@johnfalcone3693

Chains stretch over the life of the engine, so if you have an old chain with new tensioners/guides, the new hardware will be working at the edge of their design tolerance, whereas with a new chain/tensioners/guide everything will be working within the spec the manufacturer designed the engine too which will put less stress on the components. So you don't need to change the chain, but you might as well because the part is cheap and you are in there anyways :D
@AP9311
6 жыл бұрын
Once the chain is loose, replace it all, chain, guides, tensioner- all the she bang!!! Even the water pump if it's part of the chain job. Do it all.
@brianbartosch7384
6 жыл бұрын
The timing chain comes in a kit that contains the chain, guides and the tensioner. The only parts you'll need to get that the kit doesn't have is the camshaft gear/phaser bolts. Those bolts are torque to yield and need to be replaced when removed. The kit also doesn't come with timing cover nor valve cover gaskets either witch you may want to replace as well.

@brianbartosch7384

This is an interference engine. Since the ecotec engine came out in 2000 I've seen many of these chains break over the years and when they do the valves get bent and the valve guides get broken witch will require the cylinder head to be replaced. It's cheaper to change that loose chain now before it snaps!
