Yes!! "O Zittre Nicht" is subtle, multi-emotional: respectful, hopeful, sad, frightened, inspiring, and heroic. An aria to be sung by a real character. But "Der Holle Rache" is just angry and athletic and angry and athletic and angry and athletic, a cartoon.

Moser is in a league of her own. Other singers can just stare with wonder. You can imagine Damrau, Sills, Sutherland etc. all listening to this with jaws dropping, transfixed. Moser sings technically perfect of course--but what sets her really apart is her dramatic chops--but she doesn't go overboard. Its all balanced perfectly. Searing, intense, unforgettable.

I actually don't think it's OK to be light in either aria. I think the Queen of the Night is a dramatic role like Kostanze, Donna Anna, Eletra, and Fiorgilini. Mozart loved the dramatic coloratura. Die Zauberflote is so popular and dramatic coloraturas are so rare that people have had to compromise when casting the Queen of the Night.

You don't hear it because lirico sprintos with agility are very rare. Massenet did an opera called "Esclarmonde." The title role for that opera requires this same voice type. Massenet said "Esclarmonde" was his favorite opera he ever composed, but it's rare to hear today because there is not a soprano around that can handle the demands of the role.

Yes, indeed. Singing coloratura is very difficult for any singer to try, unless they are used to it naturally. For some it comes easily, for some it takes a great deal more time. And the difficulty of it, partly, is to sing every single note as written - not skip several while trying to perform the passage.

With Callas' weight and health problems it was wise for not to sing this role. Even it's just 2 arias and 1:30 of the finale, the arias are tremendously difficult and could have done more damage to her. In those master classes though, Callas knows the 2 arias very well.

her second aria was okay. Still think that Damrau is way better, But this was baaad. She sang like the second with power when it's supposed be a sad aria. The pivitol a-- was also quite terrible, with each notes mixed up together and uneven. Luciana Serra is clearly better for this aria
@jjh2456
9 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I disagree with you. Her coloratura is spot on here. Luciana Serra can't add the type of drama to this aria that Edda does. Luciana's voice is too light for this role. Also Luciana's F6 is barely audible, whereas Edda not only hits it, she holds it so you know that it's an F6.
@AstriaICOW
9 жыл бұрын
Jose Hill It's not supposed to be dramatic. Mozart's operas are not the usual dramatic operas that other composers compose, which is why lyrical people tend to sing Mozart better. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "lightness." If you mean that Luciana has a lighter tone than most, that's actually seen as superior, since most opera singers insist on changing their timbre to have that dark, mature tone. If you don't do that and you can still sing as well, that means that you have killer skills, which Luciana has. Making your sound shrieky just so you can show your F6 is not singing, that's screaming. Mariah Carey does something similar, which is whistling, and that's not what most people would consider to be on par with Opera singers, who use head voice to hit those notes. An opera singer who can level their voice so that their sound doesn't change, as they go high or low, is always seen as a superior singer (for e.g. Barbara Bonney, while not have a dramatic soprano voice, is known for doing this supremely) than those who had to change their timber when they go high, which is what is happening here.
@jjh2456

The Queen of the Night is one of the dramatic Mozart roles. Just like Kostanze, Donna Anna, Fiorgilini, Vitellia, and Elettra. They require big and agile voices. This aria is not supposed to be light. The role is not supposed to be light. Many lyric coloraturas kill their voices with this role. Luciana Serra was not and was never good in this role.
@AstriaICOW
9 жыл бұрын
Jose Hill LOL. Luciana Serra actually got her fame precisely for this role. She's considered one of the greatest coloraturas of her generation because of her interpretation of the Queen of the Night Aria. Because I, like many others, don't care about what the role is supposed to be. We care about how the aria sounds. An aria that sounds well-sung is always going to be better than an aria that sound screechy, whether you want to make it dramatic or not. Also Moser clearly has a very wide vibrato that she does not even regulate when she goes up or down, which compromises the perceived pitch of the aria, and it indicates that she doesn't have good control of her voice. And Mozart's Aria does not require additional dramaticism. His music is already dramatic enough, no additional touch-up is needed for his already brilliant music which flows the emotion all by itself. That was the reason why many lyrical coloraturas kill their voices with a Mozartian role like this one, because it is more difficult to sing lyrical than dramatic as you go higher up. It requires much more difficult technique.
@jjh2456

Amazing! Up until the middle of the Larghetto, this aria has no note above the medium high f and could be convincingly sung by a mezzo.
