Joe often talks with other comedians about writing and honing material, but to be able to convey humor in a second or even third non-native language is the epitome of a sophisticated mind...and when Eddie relayed this aspect of his act to Joe, I think Joe suddenly felt very 'parochial' indeed, in spite of the sheer size of the U.S.A...and the audience "bio-mass" it affords touring comedians.

American stand ups are very insular, and (wrongly) think themselves as the very best. Here is an example of how far someone like Rogan has been shown he has to go to even conceptualise being a master of the craft, and worst of all, by someone who probably clashes with his ethos and makes him feel uncomfortable
@donnietobasco9791
3 жыл бұрын
@@theoneanton Indeed....in the English speaking, post-colonial world, Billy Connolly probably takes some beating, but you'll never hear JR mentioning him in the context of "greatness" popularity and global reach. Assuming off course, that "the craft" at it's ultimate, ninja level....is the skill to make great and varied numbers of the world's demographic laugh....and to create a positive and profitable outreach towards them. My psychology professor once claimed that the highest mastery of learning a foreign language was the ability to make its native speaker's laugh....but not for them to just laugh at your poor language mastery or translational faux pas.....but at your actual "content" and your ability to understand a foreign psyche so well....that you can actually muck about in that language. Then there's Charlie Chaplin and Mr Bean off course!! "Silent" comedy which cleverly transcends language and attains reach because its a solely visual medium. Rogan IS notoriously parochial in his assessment of "great" comedy....but I guess American stand-up is his wheel-house and some might say it would be a vanity for any comedian to try and pitch their act in a second language. There's also the fact that US success is usually rewarding enough (financially) for those who make it, so there's hardly any incentive to look for career outreach beyond this. I wonder how Bernard Manning and Chubby Brown would have fared at the Comedy Store?....lol

English, German and French are extremely similar languages, they do share a lot of structure, for example the past tenses. Even sayings. Or words that might not seem similar at first sight. Take the word "knee" for example. Where does the K come from? The German word is Knie. So same word basically, but the K is spoken.
