It’s well known that Eddie was a complete prick. The way he talked about Randy shows how fragile his ego was. He said Randy learned everything from him, which if you know anything about music is a ridiculous statement. They were completely different types of players. They both changed music forever, they both had unique styles of their own and both were the best at that time. As a professional guitarist, I think Randy was an all around better player. I think Eddie knew that and couldn’t stand all the Attention Randy was getting. So he put him down every chance he could. Gotta love that AI! This is the first I've heard about Sammy not wanting keyboard driven songs, but a more harder sound. I know Roth didn't want Eddie playing keyboards, but not Sammy. I loved their music especially the OU Eight Hundred and Twelve album, although the Five Thousand One Hundred and Fifty album ain't bad either.

@@walterevans2118Dude, Ed was a great riff writer, no doubt. Ed never wrote one complete song from start to finish. Dave and Sammy would take all these riffs and have Ed do new parts to replace the unusable parts. Dave and Sammy write the lyrics and the melodies, not Ed. There is a reason that Dave era sounds like Dave and Sammy era sounds like Sammy. There is a reason both of those eras were very successful. Now Ed left to his own devices came out with VH's biggest flop in VHIII! So no, Edward was NOT a great songwriter. Ed, and apparently nuthugging fans like you thought VH was all him. After Ed's gargantuan ego was deflated to the size of a peanut...they had to go back and do 1974 covers of their own music!!! Because Ed, who was ALWAYS working in his multi-million dollar studio (insert laugh here), had nothing to show anyone! Dave however had to wrote all new lyrics, choruses, melodies while Ed had to coached in writing riffs to make up for the ones he used in other songs redone for VH albums like Fair Warning.

@@RichardGutierrezRG You were there in the studio watching the interactive writing process between the band members were you ? People like Steve Rosen would have better access to that then you. VH 3 was Ed’s experiment independent of the Roth/ Hagar fan base which didn’t sell….I don’t think his studio was multi million either…You really believe Roth wrote those new bridges and choruses ? You are delusional..Alex said Roth never wrote his original melodies between 1977 - 1984 in the studios. It was Ted Templeman making all the suggestions to him being a singer himself…Also when ADKOT was recorded it was Ed re-writing his OWN stuff and changing the parts…Roth rarely showed up for rehearsals to interact with the band on a performance basis let alone a WRITING basis…Roth did write the lyrics but with the music Edward was the central driving force and in his words ‘the spark plug’ …You revisionalist polemic isn’t going to change that ..'Ed's gargantuan ego' ? .....If that was so why when Piers Morgan used the title 'the greatest guitarist in the world' for him did Ed look embarrassed & said sheepishly -'Well I din't come up with the title' ..(Paul)

Eddie was better and more important historically than RR. I personally liked Randy's playing better. But the 8 notes appreciated licks and the way Randy did his pentatonic licks and tapping was right out of Van Halens style. If any of you played guitar you'd know this. Again I liked Randy's playing better but Van Halen was the greater player , the swing, shuffle, grind, hamerons , symmetrical scales, classical based tapping. it was all Eddie.

The band chemistry is what made them famous. Sure, Roth was an outstanding showman but he was an average singer. However, when I listen to the old music Roth's way of expressing the lyrics and his outrageous personality was key for the band. Both Michael Anthony and Alex were an outstanding rhythm section! Any musician knows that the rhythm section is the KEY for any band to be good! A team effort and all the other players down the road did not provide the chemistry that the original band had!

I've seen a lot of unflattering things about " Eddie" lately. The one thing that you don't do when you are a rock god, is be remembered poorly. Shame on you Eddie, I'll always be a fan, but now when I hear your music, it just brings me down ( a lot of us really), that's on you! I don't mean to be harsh, because I couldn't imagine the types of stress that you have lived through, some things are unforgivable. This is how you will be remembered, and I'm sure worse, with a lot we'll never hear.

No. They were just different. I will say this though, as a guitarist, RR`s is easy to play. EVH is almost impossible to play. NOBODY can play half of the things he played. He played with that swing that is uncopyable. Your comment shows that you are not a musician, and thats cool, nothing wrong with that. If you were a guitarist you would know the truth. Both were amazing players for sure.
