The most beautiful song in The Sound of Music. When I was a child in the mid-1960's, there was a neighborhood theater that ran The Sound of Music continuously for several years. It wasn't a multi-plex (they didn't exist in our city back then)...it was just a single theater. That's how important that movie was.

I was 10 yrs old when I saw this movie in the Globe Theater in Calcutta, India. We dressed up for the movies then. At intermission, we went out to get snacks and use the bathroom. This film was so rich in content, romance, sweetness, drama, music, that it changed something in my core. Liesl and Maria were so beautiful, the Baroness too, the Captain so handsome, the story so enthralling, I could never forget it. And we sang those songs at home, I was always singing them, and I loved that yodeling song. Julie Andrews articulation was perfect. Thank you, Sound of Music. What a story!

I was ten years old when this masterpiece was released to the big screen. Our family of five didn't attend movies very often, however; this movie was so special we all dressed in our Sunday clothes. I was even younger, but saw it and then saw it again when it was re-released on the big screen in the 1970s for a brief run - probably 1975. I had already developed such a crush on Julie Andrews - her elegant beauty, her voice, her British accent. I didn't even know at first that it was a British accent. I just thought she talked nice, and to this day I still favour RP British speech.

So you have to come to Austria (my Motherland) and you will see Austria is much more than Sound of Music. I saw this Film first when I was 21 years old (in the 90ies). I didn´t even know that this movie exists. :-) It is not very popular in Austria. Because it tells a lot of sterotypes. And every Austrian will kill you if you order "schnitzels with noodles" :-) Edelweiss is not the Anthem of Austria it is a protected flower in the Alps 🙂

One of the first movies I seen when I moved to my new foster home with my brothers one year earlier at 4 years old. I was moved in so many ways. The coldness of some parents putting money over their relationships with their children. The cruelty of war. The Joy of music. The beautiful songs. The woman who cared for the children most of all. The beautiful country of ( Austria, said Switzerland at first. Thanks for the correction). The sadness yet joy of the movie overall. Memories of a movie theater that no longer exists. Memories of attending with one brother no longer with us in life. Memories of another brother I'm happy to talk to today. Loving and strict foster parenting. Thanks for the Memories.

About 10 seconds into the movie I was so drawn into the story, watched this masterpiece over 30 times . My macho buddies mocked me until I managed to drag each of them to the theater and they too became loyal fans. A timeless classic. I had the hood fortune years later to meet Julie Andrew's by chance at Kennedy Airport. She could not have been nicer a few words and a smile from her and I just about melted into the floor.
