The Edgar A. Long Building, named after Principal Edgar A. Long, was built in 1927 and is the last remaining structure from the original 185-acre Christiansburg Institute campus. This building served as classroom space for students at Christiansburg Industrial Institute (C.I.I.), a regional center for African Americans’ secondary education in Southwest Virginia. C.I.I. students assisted in all aspects of the building’s construction, from making the bricks to shingling the roof.
Christiansburg Institute, Inc. (C.I., Inc) envisions a restored and operational Edgar A. Long building functioning as a flexible community gathering space and dynamic intergenerational learning center, serving the diverse communities across the New River Valley. C.I., Inc is currently engaged in the process of raising capital funds to preserve and restore the historic Edgar A. Long building.
