Conducted by Matthias Pintscher, the Ensemble Intercontemporain performs Intégrales by Edgard Varèse. "Yellow Shark" concert performed on 29 septembre 2018 at the Salle des Concerts of the Cité de la Musique in Paris.
Composed in 1923, Intégrales by Edgard Varèse for brass, woodwind, and percussion 17 instruments, is the first work by the French composer to carry the description of "spatial music": it illustrates the experimental concept of transcribing visual phenomena into music. The result of a quasi-scientific method of composition, the work is focused upon the strength of sonority and the precision of instrumental attacks.
As explained one of Varèse's students, the work was composed despite the instrumental limitations and those surrounding the art of musical notation. It is important not to hear the instruments individually but rather to listen to the "blocks" of sound created by Varèse's orchestration, and the distinctions in timbres between each of these blocks.
