Neat to see this old video of you in your younger days! Now, according to the data in a Larrin Thomas article, 420HC is one of the toughest stainless steels. This is one reason I recently purchased a Buck 726 (Mini Spitfire) for my deep wilderness hunting needs next fall. 2.1 oz lock back folder with a great geometry for game processing, and a blade that is super tough yet soft enough to be sharpened on a smooth rock, easy to strop with a belt before that, and made of nothing but metal so it will last a lifetime and never add plastic to the oceans. And less than 50 bucks! Thanks Buck! And thank you Cedric for providing outstanding data over the years, mighty appreciated!

Amazing. This makes Paul's heat treatment method roughly 33.33% greater in wear resistance/edge retention than (probably) pretty much every other 420HC blade, give or take +/- a good 5-7% it clears easily with flying colours even if you're pessimistic. So this is why the Buck Pursuit Pro in S35VN has been known to be able to field dress multiple friggin' deer without a need of sharpening. I own both sizes of the Pursuit Pro & a regular Pursuit small. They're amazing EDC fixed blades, especially the smaller 3.5" one.

How about Bucks s30v vs another s30v, would definitely be interesting to see if the heat treat still makes a difference, plus the vantage pro is only like $60 in the us which is exceptional bang for buck (pun intended)

44 cuts to 67 cuts is just over 50% more (44 x 1.5 = 66). Nice review. I would think that the Paul Bos heat treat would be an industry standard for 420 HC. There must be many people who know exactly how Mr. Bos does it. Thank you for doing this review. I love Buck knives.

Buck’s 420HC is great for an inexpensive stainless steel, and it tunes up pretty nicely with a few passes on a barber’s strop loaded with medium or fine paste.

Bucks was great but there are so many other steels that are just better now. Nitro-v, 14c28n, d2, 154cm when priced reasonably, 13c26, 9/10cr, hell even aus-8 or 8cr kinda stomp it for pocket knives

For the Buck knife to achieve 150% of the work of the Leatherman you really have to consider the Paul Bos 420HC as a different steel altogether from the budget friendly but low performance regular 420HC

@SG-ds8pr

Both of those steels are better off with a milder heat treat. S110v can get up to 68 hrc but at that point edge retention means nothing when you’re chipping your edge on cardboard. s100v is better around 64-66 hrc because it will still have ridiculous edge retention but will maintain some toughness.

Interesting. How does the hardness of the blades compare? I know Buck runs their 420HC a point or two higher than Case's "True Sharp" 420HC, and holds an edge a little longer, at least partly, for that reason.

Despite being the budget friendly end of town, I thought this was the most interesting showdown so far. But I'm wondering, were the bevels about the same angle? Did the meatier Buck have more meat actually supporting the edge or were they pretty similar where it would count for edge retention?
@CedricAda
7 жыл бұрын
Everyday Adventure I would guess the bit that wears in a test like this would be the same quarter of a millimeter or so from the absolute edge and just under it (to use laymans terms) with the extra thickness just making it a bit harder to cut with on the buck. The best I can do is put the same WS edge on each in terms of removing that variable, I think!
@eachday9538
7 жыл бұрын
CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Yeah I suppose the steel that supports the edge from chipping or folding for a non impact cut would probably be pretty close to the apex, probably all within that micro convex area the belt is creating, which should be pretty uniform. Although it would be starting that appleseed curve based on the existing bevel, so maybe a bit different. Just wondering if that might have contributed to the better performance of the thicker blade, but probably not much of a factor. Don't mind me, I'm just peer reviewing your science to make it extra sciency.
@eachday9538

Actually it probably wouldn't be chipping would it, even on a chip prone steel. What is the dullness caused by in this test? Deformation mostly I guess and a bit of abrasion?
@CedricAda
7 жыл бұрын
Everyday Adventure I would say the microabrasions from the rope strands, its a sort of fluffy, fibrous stuff. Just sort of polishing down the microserrations that form the absolute edge. Just waiting for cliff stamp or someone to appear and lol at my terminology heheh
