Next on our UK family adventure, we explored Edinburgh with our 3 kids. createplaytravel.com/ We visited Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, walked along the King's Mile, and hiked up to Arthur's Seat. We also visited Greyfriars were we saw several gravestones which may have inspired names of Harry Potter characters. Finally, we spent an afternoon at the National Museum of Scotland. After we left Edinburgh, we stayed for a few days in Dunblane, Scotland and visited the Wallace Monument.
My husband Andy and I took our kids on a month-long trip to the United Kingdom. We spent a few days in Edinburgh, where we got settled into our hotel, and checked out the swimming pool.
Often while traveling, we reserve a single hotel room for our family of 5. Our kids take turns sleeping on the floor or a pull-out bed, depending on the size of the room. We usually don't spend much time in our hotel room during the day.
One of our goals in traveling is to introduce our kids to new experiences and cultures. Andy has also learned many tips and tricks for how to travel on a budget, which we hope to share in another video. We were only in Edinburgh for a few days, so we tried to visit some memorable destinations. Before we went out exploring each day, our kids completed some pages in their homeschool math and language arts workbooks.
One cool family destination which we visited was Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. This was a fun place for our kids to explore how mirrors and lighting can trick the eye. In one room, pinpoints of light reflected by mirrors seemed to go on forever. We also walked through the Vortex Tunnel and tried to escape the Mirror Maze.
Another very windy afternoon, we hiked up to Arthur's Seat summit, which is an extinct volcano in Edinburgh. The hike was easy enough for our three kids, although the wind was very blustery. Once at the top, we could see the beautiful countryside in all directions, and the North Sea.
Next, we walked down the Royal Mile. I really enjoyed seeing the beautiful stone buildings along either side of this historic road.
One particularly rainy day in Edinburgh, we visited Greyfriars Kirkyard. Some of the names in this graveyard may have inspired several of J. K. Rowling's characters in her Harry Potter series. It was literally pouring so we didn't spend too much time exploring, but we saw gravestones inscribed with names such as Riddell, Moodie, and McGonagall. Evidently nearby stones also bear the names Potter and Cruikshanks. Regardless, this was a very cool old graveyard to walk through, even in pouring rain.
Last but not least, we visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. I really enjoyed exploring the Animal World gallery, seeing gemstones up close, and learning a little bit about Scottish history and innovation. We also enjoyed the fashion gallery and aviation collection.
After we left Edinburgh, we headed to Dunblane, Scotland. During our stay in this picturesque small town, we enjoyed several walks and visits to the park.
In Dunblane, we stayed with a women through Servas, which is an international network of hosts and travelers. She graciously hosted our family for several days. Servas is a great way to meet new people and experience new cultures. We've had a memorable experience staying with people in their homes and hosting others in return. During our stay in Dunblane, Scotland, we had the chance to explore the local town, visit a church, and make plans for the next few weeks of our trip.
One afternoon we took a short drive to the National Wallace Monument. The easy hike up the trail was good exercise. Although we arrived too late in the day to climb to the top of the tower, the visit was still worthwhile.
The National Wallace Monument was built in the 1860s in the Victorian Gothic style, to commemorate Sir William Wallace. The monument is certainly an impressive view, overlooking the city of Stirling in Scotland.
Next on our UK family adventure, we head to France to explore Nice and Marcelle and swim in the Mediterranean Sea. For more creative family ideas, visit createplaytravel.com.
