Edith slapped Archie's arm to get him to listen to her (Archie was eating a can of spaghetti). "They're my friends and I want to keep them!" In this episode, Archie broke his promise to Edith never to gamble as long as they were married. The expression on Archie's face after Edith slapped him was priceless! You guys don't understand WHY she slapped him. Archie had an addiction to gambling and when Gloria was first born, they almost lost everything because of it. Edith was going to take Gloria and leave. But Archie promised in writing he would never gamble again. In this episode, he broke his promise to Edith. Hence her comment "it was glow woim in da fifth." Edith's anger was based more out of fear because Archie lost the car and his entire paycheck all to gambling.

I think Archie had a gambling problem when younger, and Edith didn't want him to go back to that so she got pissed and slapped him.I think it was the only time she slapped him.I don't think he ever cheated on Edith, but he came close to it once.Even though she was daffy, I didn't like him calling her dingbat, and some other ways he put her down. She wanted a job but Archie wouldn't let her work. She briefly worked for George Jefferson, and at a nursing home for the elderly.Sometimes she stood her ground.

It was just a TV show, but sometimes I think Edith WAS too good for Archie. She was definitely a saint.

@@TheBrooklynbodine Yes, in season 8 in the episode where Archie and Mike get locked in the storeroom of the bar, we learn that Archie was actually abused by his father as a kid. Its very sad actually. And it gives important insight as to why Archie is a lot the way he was in present day. I don't mind telling you I tear up every time he says to Mike "you're supposed to love your father because your father loves you. And how can any man that loves you tell you anything that's wrong." I think Edith saw something in Archie most did not. Beneath the baggage he carried from his father and World War II and a changing country he could not cope with was a loving man and a good Christian. I didn't know Janis Paige was still alive! Cool!

@@retroguy9494 Also, Mike revealed that his dad was just like Archie's dad. I wonder how the senior Mr. Stivic would have reacted to Mike marrying a non-Polish, protestant girl (Gloria). In an early episode, from about the 3rd season, I'd guess, Mike's uncle wanted a priest to wed Mike and Gloria. He said that Mike had been born and baptized a Catholic. Two other things. Mike's uncle was played by Michael Conrad, who went on to fame as Sgt. Esterhaus on "Hill Street Blues" and Carroll O'Connor was a Catholic in real life.

Edit slaps Gloria in the episode "Edith's 50th Birthday" which was originally aired as a 1 hour episode but only shows now as 2 half hour episodes. It would be "Edith's 50th Birthday part 2" - a rapist tries to rape Edith in the first half, and she gets away. Gloria tries to tell her to call the police but she is afraid and won't. Gloria calls her selfish and says she no longer considers Edith her mother. Edith slaps Gloria and then realizes she really does need to call the police.

@potterpuff I agree, but the principal of the issue is that, in this society, physical violence by woman toward men, regardless of how strong the woman, is accepted. It is not considered as extreme as if the man hit the woman. I think that to be wrong. This episode of "All in the Family" illustrates that. It was a highly rated series and when Edith hit Archie, there was laughter and applause.

Most TV shows and movies with slaps are real slaps. If they have blooper reels, you will usually see at least one slap that the person talks about it hurting.
