Up next is and interview backstage with Russel and Ed by Kink NL, just before they played at Pinkpop on the 16th June 2023. One thing about this encounter really stood out to me, when the subject of the difficulties of playing such an electronic-heavy record like EBM live comes up.
Ed - "I think quite a lot of people are quite surprised at the role that me and Russell, the rhythm section, have on this quite electronic sounding record".
I would go a little further and suggest that the very reason EBM exists, and all 3 records prior to it, is directly because of Russell and Ed. Around the time just after Chris was asked to leave in 2012 there was apparently a very dark period where the band were contemplating splitting up for good. They had a show at Werchter booked and Tom wasn't keen, but he was persuaded into it by Ed and Russell. It was that show that solidified Editors as a band again, but now with the addition of Elliott and Justin. That's how important their contribution is.
There's a fairly big reveal here, as Russell says they have demos in place and will be working on new material later in the year. This is great news, but as all things with plans made post-pandemic, I would take them purely at face value and always with the knowledge that they could change in a heart beat. Enjoy the chatter ;)
