Here's a song that just doesn't receive the love it used to be accorded any more, so let's see if we can change that. Push Your Head Towards the Air was a single from Editors second album, An End Has a Start, and acted as a calm interlude on that record between the more frantic pace set by Racing Rats and Escape the Nest. The overall tone of AEHAS was bigger, louder, faster but this was one of three songs that really reiterated the band's ability to carefully control a composition's dramatic ascent in the way they had with Camera on The Back Room. The Weight of the World and Spiders being the other two that displayed that skill.
This is a very minimal acoustic take that was played in Italy on the AEHAS tour, and saw Russell not only taking on the role of being a pianist again, but also as head support for Tom.
The danger of looking back this far is that you may find yourself longingly melancholic for an era that is clearly over, forgetting that there's still joy to be found in the fact that you were either lucky enough to be present in real time, or that we have methods of experiencing it all over again years later.
Push Your Head Towards the Air also had a great video, echoes of which can be seen in Rahi's film for the song Magazine which came ten years later. People wearing business suits and fighting in slow motion will never get old. I also have a very amusing behind the scenes clip featuring all four Editors at that time, who assuredly weren't behaving with the gravitas the song's tone may have suggested. You can see it here:-
