This is the second of two videos filmed from her regular position in the front row of an Editors show, this one in Prato Italy on the 3rd September 2023, by previous Archive contributor, Sanne. Thank you ;)
It's sobering to acknowledge that we've traversed 14 years in time since The Boxer was first released, and in terms of the subject matter it addresses and progress made away from it, our collective feet remain set in concrete and immobile. Late night drunken male aggression in city centres is still very much a thing, and for as long as we have alcohol it's probably not going anywhere. It's a credit to Tom that he was able to conjure up so succinctly the feelings and fears associated with this phenomenon through the lyrics to The Boxer, and also the way it can still connect with the listener so long after its inception. You suspect this will always be a relevant commentary.
We should also remember that by the time their third record had come out, Editors had spent years out on the road playing the very cities he was singing about, and the majority of the time at night. There's an old adage that dictates you should always write about what you know, and by 2009 I'm sure he had ample material from which to draw inspiration.
In the same way that Well Worn Hand was the saddest song on An End Has a Start and is, coincidentally, another composition dealing with male violence, The Boxer has always resonated with me as being able to easily hold that accolade on In This Light. If you wanted to be picky you could probably assert that it's second only to Walk the Fleet Road in that regard, but for entirely different reasons. I'm not sure I'd be able to talk you out of that position.
Enjoy the music ;)
