eDNA 101
Presenter: Dr. Susanna Theroux - Southern California Coastal Water Research Project
This webinar will provide a broad overview of methods and applications.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is DNA that can be found in the environment, including water, soil, or air. Environmental DNA can include both organismal DNA from microscopic organisms such as protists and bacteria, and extra-organismal DNA from larger organisms that is shed via skin, mucous, feces, etc. Once shed, eDNA can persist in the environment hours to weeks, largely
depending on state (intracellular, extracellular, particle-bound) and environmental processes.
