Edradour distillery has some close but larger neighbor distilleries, Blair Athol next door and Aberfeldy, a few miles down the road. Dalwhinnie distillery is only 30 miles to the northwest on Highway A9. Regardless of it's close proximity to these distilleries, Edradour, and it's hidden sister distillery, Edradour 2 are so much different than their neighbors. The reason could be that both the old Edradour and the new Edradour 2 are much smaller in size as well as in production. They also use some of the older traditional whisky making methods and equipment. Most of the equipment in the new Edradour 2 are exact replicas of the old Edradour distillery equipment. Some of that equipment hasn't changed in over a hundred years. So we can say that both of the Edradours, the old and the new are trying to produce whisky the way it was made over 100 years ago. Doesn't that sound familiar to another distillery in Campbeltown.
We tried to arrange a tour of Edradour distillery when we were back in Canada but became aware of the closure of the visitor center and the tours for 2024. We decided to visit the distillery regardless and did get some photos as well as we got a chance to talk to the locals about the distillery. The explanation on Edradour's website for the closure of the visitor center and the tours was that they were unable to get staff. Some of the locals told us different. Edradour is still a business that has to make a profit so they must have had their reasons. What is interesting is Edradour was one of the first distillery visitor centers which has been running since 1982 and one of the busiest distillery tour schedules in Scotland with over 100,000 visitors per year.
If you are a Scotsman (or a lady Scot) you probably have heard Doogie MacLean's patriotic song "Caledonia". That must have touched Andrew Symington because he collaborated with MacLean on producing this twelve year old "Caledonia" single malt whisky. It is bottled at 46% ABV, is non chill filtered and natural color.
We also know that it spent a little over half of it's life in Bourbon barrels then it was finished for approximately 5 years in Oloroso Sherry Butts. I could tell you more but there is a video to watch that I think you will enjoy. Slàinte Mhath
