I think they are getting better and better. I understand people who are nostalgic about their earlier sound, but this is profound and complex and I think we can all agree they evolved beautifully.

By the way, with or without Jade means nothing. This guy is pure magic and always will be. What is life without transformation, endings and new beginnings? For all those people that only liked ESMZ for Jade can stay on the hating side. ✌🏻👋🏻

This is my first Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros song and whilst I have no idea who Jade is, as a new listener, Hot Coals is superb. I hope they have other songs like this one.

In many ways, this feels like the kind of masterpiece one achieves without the distractions of love and drugs. Mind you, those things are necessary in order to reach this level, but once you do-once you have gained the insight, wisdom, and inspiration that are brought forth by those things-you can finally shed the skin and truly become what you were always meant to be. The band had finally come into their own being. It's different, but it sounds so good. And it's nice to finally hear The Magnetic Zeros for the very first time. Me, I'm not quite there yet...no, I'm still in purgatory. And I don't know if I'll ever get there in time. But for now, it feels so good to be reassured...that music isn't just all about that...that this path is in fact leading to somewhere interesting. It's like that quote from Bono, "you kill for inspiration and sing about the grief." - "Home" was indeed a masterpiece, but it was just a prologue to something like "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." Happy songs about love, youth and innocence are always nice to go back and drink to from time to time; but it's the songs about despair, misery, and heartache that people will listen and get wasted to a hundred, two hundred years from now. It's such a shame that a lot of their fans were only in it for the love and not the crashing. It took me a while to be in a place where I can listen to their work sans Jade Castrinos, but now that I am and I have, I can say that it's good. Yes, it's good. I like it very much. I like it a lot. Kinda wish I was high right now, but I don't have to be. I'm doing just fine. Not great, I've been better-but I'm doing just fine.

I feel like a lot of bands are trying to get to new boundaries but these guys are trying to reach the flow of their freshman album and entirely over toured the very same album making it impossible to maintain that fresh sound it carried. This isn't a knock on them but an observation. I've seen them many times and felt as if each show was just a bit less each time and seeing what I saw as a full on fall apart in Cincinnati 2 years ago. Always hoping for the best for these guys tho.

I think the mask on the album cover represents Jade. And the title, Hot Coals, means that it's not a raging fire that fills his heart with love for Jade - any longer - but hot coals. I'm could be wrong, but is quite unlikely. I'm usually a level seven wizard at these things. :)
