An excellent athlete with great technical skills! At the end of the first match against Roberto Duran, we all see the same gesture of refusal of defeat by the Panamanian who never accepted defeat. I am happy to know that this very strong athlete is in good health. Congratulations Rich, you made a nice video dedicated to this excellent athlete that makes us all remember him.

Viruet. an ATG talent who just never got fanfare. Outboxed Duran in both fights but Robertos already massive legend and peoples champ status got him the nods. Viruet also schooled a young Mambi, and a young Escalera before they became elites. He was again robbed against Esteban De Jesus, and that took any steam or ambition he had away. Inactivity began and he was done for by the time he fought Edwin Rosario.

You could see that Edwin really laid the blueprint for the “ No Mas” fight . His disdainful attitude and hotdogging really got under Duran’s skin . Instead of setting his man up intelligently, Hands of Stone was trying take Edwin’s head off with every punch.
Maybe but the Duran that fought Leonard the first fight was a completely different fighter the second fight.so its hard to say why he quit .don't forget he was almost 200 pounds from partying after the first fight and was offered alot of money from sugar ray Leonard's camp for a rematch that happened pretty much right away.they knew the shape Duran was in and thats why it was a quick rematch.

Credit for that but that is as far as it goes. Edwin didnt let his hands go enough to win those fights. He clowned, mocked and played to the crowd but Viruet didnt score enough punches. I’ve heard stories that Sugar Ray Leonard or someone else on Ray’s team saw the two Duran-Viruet fights & noted how Edwin’s continual showboating & teasing tactics got into Roberto’s mind & flustered him. So, you see, even though Viruet didn’t become a lightweight world champ in any shape or form, it was very likely Viruet who influenced Sugar Rays boxing style in the second Leonard-Duran fight & aided in scoring Ray the win. Striking too is the way that Viruet was physically built very similar to Leonard (Leonard was around 5 ft 9 at his peak, before he started to shrink a little) & Viruet was around 5 ft 8-and-a-quarter & both had long arms & legs. By the way, I’ve watched both Duran-Viruet fights & don’t think Viruet won either of them, although the first one was very close. The second one wasn’t close at all & Viruet is delusional for believing that!

@@himawalincat9350 Agree, Viruet did make Duran look ‘somewhat ineffectual’ but the important thing is that Duran won both fights. Viruet didn’t land enough punches on Duran. Also, Viruet couldn’t punch hard enough to make Duran back up at anytime. This is the big difference between Viruet & Leonard. Viruet’s punches had little effect on Roberto. Leonard’s punches hard some effect. Roberto will be the first one to tell you that himself. He names Leonard as the Best overall fighter he ever fought. However, he never once mentions Viruet (in any category).

@@arjunakorale6166 I had the same thing in my mind. Viruet lacked fire power... As far as Duran not mentioning Viruet is something you can understand. They were both Spanish speaking(in other words they were in the same shoe.) Duran was the one who "attacked"Leonard and Leonard is a big name. Viruet was the one taunting Duran and the one made him look bad. Viruet also stopped Duran's consecutive KO title defenses record at 10. Duran probably still doesn't like Viruet and he is not intend to give him any credit. I still think Viruet had the edge in the first fight. Duran didn't do enough either. He couldn't.
@arjunakorale6166

@@Robert-qm5so I agree 100% that Benitez conclusively & decisively beat Duran on points over the 15 rounds (I’ve viewed that fight on multiple occasions and AT BEST I give Duran only 3 or 4 of that 15 rounder, with Benitez taking at least 11 or 12 rounds of that fight). However the HAGLER-DURAN FIGHT IS ANOTHER MATTER ALTOGETHER. Now that was a very close fight with Duran giving Hagler all he could handle. The Hagler-Duran fight is an impressive notch in Duran’s belt. Duran was fighting the second greatest middleweight world champ (after Carlos Monzon) in history & Roberto fought Marvelous right down to the wire (it was close, close, close). Hell, after 12 rounds, all three judges had scored that fight a draw & it was only due to the fact that Duran was an ancient 32 yrs old (with more than 80 fights already under his belt), his 5 ft 7 inch frame weighed down by all the excess weight, that the youthful Hagler managed to pull a win ‘out of the bag’. Hagler was a natural middleweight & was physically a much bigger-boned man than natural lightweight Duran & that’s why Roberto had to use lateral movement & expert counterpunching to tame Hagler. AND NO, DURAN DID NOT BACKPEDAL (you could accuse Leonard of doing that but NOT Roberto - Roberto fought Hagler like a man).

I'm glad he got out of the game before his long term health was affected and that he's doing well today. I couldn't stand him in the 70s and 80s though. He posed as a tough guy but he didn't have the punch to back it up. I thought Duran beat him easily in both their fights and it was only because Roberto had such a vicious reputation at the time and was at his peak that Edwin's mere survival and boasting behavior in the ring gave fans the impression his performance was more than it was. Even in the non-title fight where Duran looked fleshy and out of shape, he hit Viruet hard and often in every round. I thought their 15 rounder wasn't close to being close. I have to admit, I took a bit of pleasure seeing Rosario destroy him and his diarrhea excuse after the KO to be...well...what diarrhea is. I guess I never liked boxers who were 85% defense and 15% offense and that's what he and Jimmy Young were. They'd run around the ring throwing powderpuff punches and would claim victory.
