Folmer has long been interested in the struggles that blind people face in their lives, and specifically the problem of video gaming. There are 6.8 visually impaired Americans, 1.3 million of which are fully blind, and 60,000 of which are children. Childhood blindness greatly impairs the ability to be physically active, which as a result has made blind children the most likely demographic for obesity and diabetes at a young age. All of these people have very limited access, if any, to the rich world of gaming. For Folmer, this presented a real problem that he was determined to find solutions for.
