The term Endothermic is used because the Nicad cells actually absorb heat during the first 80% (approx) of the charging process. There would be heat generated by the charging process which would be absorbed, so the overall effect is not to get colder but to stay roughly flat. In practice I believe it rises a small amount, but nothing like the 100% exothermic NiMH. You'd have to look into the actual chemistry involved to know the finer details.

I have two NiMH battery packs for my Neato robot vacuum. 4/3A x 6 , 7.2V, 4000mAH. Based on voltage drop during discharging at various currents I believe the pack resistance is 0.5 ohms. I am using a Turnigy Reaktor smart charger. I would like to run 3 x Charge Discharge cycle. Please suggest what the charging current, deltaV, discharge current, discharge voltage should be set to. When I put the batteries back into the Neato Ive been getting a battery error. At this point I'd like to avoid buying a new set.

This takes me back! I used to spend a lot of time battery testing back in the 1990's when I was involved with racing a battery conversion of a Porsche 914. We used to completely baffle people by fast charging Optima YelloTop AGM lead acid batteries at up to 5C. When you're pumping in hundreds of amps and initially the voltage is DROPPING, you get a lot of people really confused. That included John Olson, the electrochemist who deveoped the battery! From later research, it seemed the high charge rates were changing the plate structure and lowering the internal resistance. The temperature increase whilst charging would decrease over a number of cycles. Other researchers found that cycle life could actually be increased by (carefully monitored & controlled) fast charging.

I had a charger that used a short to ground to pulse the current. All the clocks in the house would not keep time, and when I put a scope on the mains the frequency (& volts) would fluctuate. Finally I tracked it down to this pile of junk phone battery charger. Unplug it and it stops, Plug it back in and it starts back up. Using a digital camera as a poorman's storage scope/tracer I use a lot of AAs. Monster Cable (your favorite company) makes a great charger. I have good NiMh AAs from 1999.

I have two questions, hopefully some1 with more information will answer them. I have a Ni-cad battery pack. 1. My 12v batteries measure 14.4 volt when they are fully charged... why? 2. I'm using them a few times a month, 4-5 times per month. Can I keep them in my drill fully charged? (ready for use when I need it) I charge them fully when they are empty(0.9-1.0 V / Cell) and put them back in my drill to sit for a few days (up to 7) ready to be used again.

@@dlarge6502 You can charge at higher voltages. 1.5v per cell (in series) is great. You will see voltages such as 1.2v (1-cell), 2.4v (2-cells, charge at 3v), 3.6v (3-cells, charge at 4.5v), etc. Yes 1.2v per cell will work, but it will take waaaaaaaay longer. The cutoff discharge voltage should be around 1v, at which it's considered "discharged". Best to use cheap universal battery chargers such as IMAX B6 or other single cell chargers such as the Mboxer, which will select the safest voltage/amperage automatically.

I think all these charge methods rely on rise of temperature. when you heat a battery its resistance drops and so voltage will also drop if current is high. unfortunately it works only when you fast charge, if current is low these methods are worthless. and may damage battery if not time limited

I do. In an RC airplane with electronics from 20years ago. When NiCds do the job I see no reason to switch to lithium-based batteries. NiMH is as safe as NiCds, with more capacity. But while NiCds can be beat to death and still work, NiMH needs a really good (expensive) charger employing all the techniques he is describing on the video. With a dumb charger they last only a few cycles.

And every little point you are making is REALLY, REALLY fucking important. lol Again, no offense I only wish you could here it with my ears, then you would understand why so many non-Aussies complain so much. On the same note though, if it's not annoying in your country then by all means, continue. I will just have to learn to tolerate it.
