John's weird rant about how self sacrifice not being heroic and having ties to toxic masculinity would probably hold more weight except in TLJ two women self sacrifice and the two scenes where they do was the most effective strategies the resistance had. That being when Rose's sister sacrificed herself and helped defeated the dreadnaught, and when admerial gender studies light speeds into the first order fleet. Also both of those women sacrificing themselves was shot in a way that showed how NOBLE it is to sacrifice yourself for a cuase and to save others. So Finn was following the example that women had shown him if anything.

Not only that, it reinforces the "it's okay when we do it" mentality that many ideologues often do. Poe being a hero was wrong until Holdo does it. +FullMetal Bat Context. Rose's sister sacrifices herself in service of Poe's assault on the dreadnought, AFTER Poe had written off the lives of everyone involved. Destroying the dreadnought did nothing to help them. Holdo's sacrifice was in service of a larger plan she had that had at least some forethought. She knew that even if they died, she'd bought them time. Finn's sacrifice, by comparison, if fuelled by a hatred of the First Order and a pure impulse to destroy them. It had no forethought and clearly wouldn't have accomplished anything. That's the reason Rose had her speech, to show that he needed to change his reasoning. I'm not even going to really pretend that your criticism is in good faith, because none of it is on this video. Smarten up.
@thespanishinquisition4078

Briandon Stark Finns’ sacrificed is fueled by the fact that it was literally the only possible way he could’ve thought of to keep the first order from slaughtering everyone. Holdo’s sacrifice was never part of her plan, but instead was a last minute reaction only after most of her crew got slaughtered and was far more blatantly fueled by a desire for revenge. You talk about good faith? Fuck if you hypocritical lying fuckwit, your excuses are transparent.

I'm something of a Jonathan McIntosh historian and to truly understand the man, you need to understand his unconventional upbringing. His parents were hippies who practiced a wacky educational process known as "unschooling". "Unschooling" involves keeping your children at home and allowing them to do whatever the hell they want in the belief that children have a natural inclination towards learning and an inherent desire to seek out knowledge. Now this may shock you but it doesn't actually work and not attending school left Jonathan unprepared for the world, not only educationally, but socially, having never learned to interact with boys his own age or to form male friendships. Then one fateful day, his parents separated. It turned out that his mother had never really been that into their kooky hippy lifestyle and she went off and married a wealthy conservative man from a military family. McIntosh's father left for the Far East (where he remains to this day, doing Yoga and Raiki and wearing beads). Anyway, Johnathan's stepdad didn't approve of all that hippie nonsense and he forced Johnny to leave the house and go to college and so, well into his late teens, Jonathan McIntosh was thrust into the harsh reality of the real world. For the first time in his life, Jonathan had to interact with other men who didn't cater to his every whim and his lack of childhood socialization left him scared and confused. Then 9/11 happened and as chance would have it, McIntosh was in New York (there is actually a photo of him pointing at the towers as they burned). Jonathan was shocked and desperately needed to understand how this had happened and so he began reading about politics. In his search for answers, he stumbled upon the works of Bell Hooks and had a life-changing epiphany: "It's not me that's wrong... It's every other man on the planet." And so his mission to end masculinity began. And that's how McIntosh became the man we know today. A sad and pitiable individual who would rather spend a lifetime analyzing the other 3.5 Billion men on Earth than engage in a few moments of self-reflection.

The funny thing is that McIntosh never realizes that the central figure of the ''Lucas saga'' was an emasculated man. At face value, Vader is a figure of towering masculinity. A person who excludes control through brutal force. But, in the end, it's revealed all of that was merely a shell for a sad broken man. And, not to mention, the PT revealed that Anakin was an insecure man who couldn't live without the women in his life. His mother and the love of his life. Most of all, it's possible that due to his injuries because of his duel on Mustafar doesn't even have a penis anymore or it is least literally damaged. So he's literally emasculated. So, all of this, feminist pandering wasn't ever really needed in Star Wars. Yes, it turns out that freaking George Lucas could do ''emasculation'' as a theme better than Rian Johnson.

I’ve never understood why people like Finn’s “character arc” in the Last Jedi. They keep saying that he decided to stop running from the First Order and decided to fight against them, but that’s what happened at the end of the Force Awakens. He took the lightsaber and fought against Kylo Ren to protect Rey. Sure, he loses the fight but it’s the fact that he had the courage to stand up to Kylo Ren that matters. People are praising something they’ve already seen and it was done better in TFA. In TLJ he declares that he’s a part of the Resistance or the Rebels because of the line “Rebel Scum” but you didn’t need that. I feel like he could have just stayed with the Resistance, fought the First Order and his actions would make that declaration for him.

About Henry Cavill being casted as Geralt, he actually played the games AND has read the books. So I'm sure he'll try to portray him as accurately as possible, as he's clearly passionate about the project. However, they are apparently looking to cast a non-white actor for Ciri. The Witcher being such a cultural icon in Poland where pretty much everyone has been white for such a long time, to cast a non-white actor for Ciri is just insane. *Out of bravery , solidifying their manhood.* Bringing up Boromir is a great example by the chat. Boromir's sacrifice is one out of redemption , due to the fact that he was succuming to the power of the ring and when one remembers the pilot from Independance Day , you can find that same goal. Yes the pilot gave his life out of love for his children , but also as a act of redemption for himself , seeing as he was a lousy father. Giving his life to ensure the survival of his children is the most he can do in the situation he finds himself in. Solidifying his love for his children , not his manhood and certainly not bravery. I'm sorry , i have to ask. Is determined suicide an act of bravery or cowardice? Because sacrificing oneself like that is still "technically" suicide. And the pilot had allot of bagage with him , depicted by his alcoholism. Fynn's sacrifice would carry some weight with it. Like rebelling against the machine that made him. (the indoctrination the First Order put him through) , his revenge. The love for the cause of the Resistance. A nobel sacrifice. Or inwardly , the possible epiphany , that this might be the only way he could disconnect himself from the First Order entirely and never be haunted by their presence again. Then in comes Rose , whom takes all of that away with an act of selfishness. A inability to disconnect herself from the (never built up in the movie) love she feels for Fynn. The inability to understand that "the needs of the many , outway the needs of the few". "We win by saving what we love." Is her admission that she loves Fynn more then the Resistance. That she loves one man more then the cause she dedicated her life to and the people that are part of it. *And movies try to romanticise men going out in a blaze of glory.* Because it is visually stunning. That is what people say about Purple Hair going out in a blaze of godrays. So what's the point? Oh a woman can do it , but when a man does it , it is counted as a sin? So you find more meaning in the gender , then you do in the act and the meaning behind it? So Riply sacrificing herself in Alien 3 , in a molten blaze of glory , is what then? Well lemme tell ya. Its her last act to ensure that Xenomorphs will no longer trouble the human race for as far as she knows. Its a middle finger to the Weyland Yutani corporation , a act of hatred towards Xenomorphs and a act of love for the common person. *Luke was never depicted as a great Jedi Warrior.* Jedi warrior? I'm sorry , i don't know what to say. Windu , care to take a crack at this? "We are peacekeepers , not soldiers." Thank you Windu. One of the key pillars of Jedi philosophy is wisdom and the attaining of. Jedi have often been described more as mystics or monks then any form of soldier or warrior. They are a mixture of Mystic Knights , Religious leaders , Monks and philosofers. Calling them warriors is selling them short as they were never meant to serve in a war. The very fact that jedi were called to be generals in the army of the republic worried Yoda and it was further expanded in the clone wars as Jedi started turning into Dark Jedi because of it. The Mandalorian war , the rise of Revan , was a perfect example of how Jedi were not meant to fight , but to protect. As it had the same effect and caused another war to follow. Funny innit? How context is usually pushed to the side when driving a narrative. "You're watching movies wrong."

Adam S Is Thor's sudden sense of humor a coping mechanism for all the people he's lost recently? What about Tony becoming more serious over time as he actually becomes close to people and realizes he now values all sorts of relationships? Dr Strange honing his ego into a force for good while Tony's ego whittles away. Captain America.... remaining Captain America but in doing that, he becomes more than just an ally or friend but a legend who stands fast even in the face of a being who may well be a god? The thing about puddles is they often reflect so if you think they're shallow it's only because you're not looking close enough. Complex plots, no... Civil War, shut up, you too Winter Soldier. And now the Guardians won't keep quiet and the Avengers movies are lining up... quick, pull up a DCEU movie to deflect! Martha! Interestingly, Steve Rogers is so simple and direct is that he makes every movie he's in more interesting and complex just by being there, remaining himself in the face of anything. They're fun action movies that have as much complexity as you're willing to accept. The difference is that Marvel characters rarely change that much in movies that aren't origin movies but when taken in series, you should be able to see... something. Character development? Some people prefer to think of it as character derailment or "Everyone's fun now!" Everyone acts the same as Peter Parker, Peter Quill and Tony Stark.... all characters who use humor in different ways for different reasons. Stick them all in the same scene and they quickly point out the manchild one.

Edit: Kinda hilarious that Aliens comes up so often in this video and then at the end they end up dealing with a video from the writer of Colonial Marines.

Maybe they never talk about the plan until it's revealed because they know it's a terrible plan so they didn't want to let the audience know that until it was too late. Cause in a good movie, there would be a scene with Leia and Holdo talking about the plan that would allow the audience to infer "oh this is why she's not telling Poe" or something to that effect
@KingHoborg
6 жыл бұрын
Not all movies do that though. Sometimes movies shouldn't have to outright tell the audience what is going on, especially if it (or the writers, at least) believes that the audience is smart enough to work out that 'maybe there's a reason why she's not telling him'. Considering that for the most part, at least as far as I know, our lenses into the world during this trilogy seem to be Poe, Rey, Kylo and Finn... If they don't know, then why should we? They're not high ranking officials in the resistance/rebellion/whatever-the-fuck-they-are (and so they aren't privy to important info like that), and neither are we. But that's just my personal belief when it comes to purposefully writing for non-omniscient (or whatever the word is for not-all-knowing) audiences. I find Poe to be a likeable enough character but while there are a lot of people out there that hold him above his station, I found his demotion (after the bomber scene) to be justified, and his apparent development into a more mature understanding of his actions beyond 'blow shit up because we can' to be well done.

@@KingHoborg Poe is a high rank. And as far as I know in TLJ the second highest rebel left as the rest got shat out the ship. And his development doesn't make any sense. Instead he should go sit in his bunker and wait to die?
@KingHoborg

I've never looked at it like that. Instead of following orders no matter what, I saw it as a case of him considering the consequences of his actions BEFORE taking them. Leia and what's her face have different priorities and preferred a more cautious approach? I don't remember there being an original plan presented to the audience as an alternative to 'fuckit, let's blow shit up'. I personally believe that a suicide run that drags hundreds of people with you is a bad thing, even if it does 'prolong the cause' by removing one ship from the field, especially when you're already outnumbered. Granted, this is my opinion and the basis for my 'strategies' (if you can even call them that) are little better than 'this one movie I saw with this situation' or 'this is what I did in a similar situation in a video game once upon a time'. We all have differing opinions, especially in a situation like that was. Eh, it really seemed to me like he was middling, or barely above middling rank in the Rebellion/Revolution whatever. But I don't claim to be even moderately all-knowing concerning the new Star Wars stuff, so you're probably more right than I am.

@@KingHoborg Commander is a fairly high naval rank. With everyone getting spaced he's one of the highest they've got left. But the suicide run he says No to is the only option they have. I have no problem with hotshot successful pilot learns to take less risks or to look before he leaps,just like I have no problem with old hero is washed up or any other example from TLJ you'd like. But unfortunately they're all done incredibly poorly. They're so rushed and or forced. Rian Johnson doesn't even try and make them seen natural or logical just hops from scene to scene then gives you a resolution that doesn't match up with the previous scenes.

KingHoborg Problem is, if the Dreadnought had survived, it would have been able to take out the Rebel fleet right after the Hyperspace jump. So what Poe did saved everyone. As opposed to, say, what Holdo did, which got everyone killed. 'The worst character in Star Wars'...? We're thinking of the same Star Wars franchise right? The one with Jar Jar Binks in it? I mean, at least people debate whether Holdo's actions were moronic or not (personally, I'm of the opinion that Dameron was an impulsive moron at the beginning [just a matter of what I believe had more value in the engagement - a wing of bomber thingies and their crews, or one big ship out of hundreds], but Holdo didn't help the situation by holding her cards to her chest and acting arrogant, if I recall from the one time I've seen TLJ)... EVERYONE (above the age of 10, at least) agrees that Jar Jar Binks should have been outright removed (and the sad part is, Ep 1 would have rolled right on without him). TLJ had a shitload of bad or outright avoidable things in it, but I don't think that the characters were among them. But that's just me. It's a solid 6 on my scale - lots of visible potential, but too much of that was undercut by... stuff.
@YeagerBomb-ww3bn
6 жыл бұрын
+KingHoborg I stand by what I said. I'm not saying Jar Jar was good. Yet compared to Holdo he is amazing. At least he had good intentions, tried to help, and it was okay to not like him. First point, Holdo was only in that film because Kathleen Kennedy didn't think women could relate to Ackbar. She killed off a fan favorite, because she didn't women could relate to a man, but thinks men can relate to women. Either she is a moron or a hypocrite. Maybe both. Not to mention Holdo is a stand in for Kathleen and is an embodiment of her toxic ideas. Second, Poe did nothing wrong. Yes he got downgraded from the last film and was turned into a punching bag. So was every other male in this story. Poe was right to blow up the dreadnought. Don't get me wrong, there are plot holes out the ass with how dumb the film is. As for Poe's actions, calling off the attack would have left the fleet, bombers, and fighters as sitting ducks for the First Order as they fell back. Also if that Dreadnought was still operational, the resistance would have been doomed after the jump. At least you admit that Holdo was a moron for withholding information. Poe wasn't beyond reason, and wouldn't have done the mutiny if he was informed. Third Hildo is the anti Leia. Think about it. Leia is everything a good female protagonist is supposed to be while Holdo is the opposite and a Merry Sue. Leia is willing to get into the trenches, explain things, put on a uniform, and lead by example. Holdo dresses up like a cocktail waitress not bothering to put on a unifrom, has flamboyant hair, can't be bothered to act like a leader in general, and is an incompetent condescending armchair hack. She got more people killed than Poe did and had nothing to show for it. Despite getting more people kill for no reason the film still wants us to think she's not a douche. Some even suggestion that Leia and Holdo were "together." That is just a bonus bit of stupid. Fourth, to hate that character is to hate all women apparently. It is at least okay to hate Jar Jar. To hate Holdo is to be a sexist! Same thing applies to the others in this film. At least Jar Jar didn't hide behind a false virtue Shield. Fifth. Lucasfilm seriously try to make Holdo a role model. At least they didn't do that with Jar Jar. Holdo isn't fit to run a restaurant let alone a resistance. That is why I despise that character the most. L3 and Rose are also worse than Jar Jar too. Must I explain those two as well?

I think the creators of TLJ reconcile Aliens as a counterpoint by that Holdo is a figure with complete authority being challenged while Ripley was challenging authority. They could have made a movie about Rey challenging some alpha male fleet commander (maybe even Poe) who was in the process of screwing up. But they didn't because they specifically wanted the movie to be about a woman already in a position of leadership, being in full control and still being challenged. The message clearly is about 'don't challenge women when they're in a position of power'. That's the point they had to get across. Which only leads me to believe that Holdo has been Kennedy's proxy from the start. Holdo was her way of channeling her frustrations with being challenged while she was supposed to have all the power. And that betrays the way she sees power. Men accept that once they reach power, they're constantly being challenged for it. That comes with the position. But Kennedy firmly believes that once a person (preferably a woman) reaches a position of power, it's hers forever, to do with as she wishes. And these pesky individual thinkers that challenger her every step of the way need to be put in their place.

So a channel that dedicates itself to exploring the problematic tropes in films towards women praises a film for reducing its female characters to the exclusive role of facilitating male character arcs. Wow. Just wow. Viewing women as moral compasses for men has been highlighted by feminism for a long time that it is wrong. It is a combination of viewing women as a utility for men as well as the idea that women are pure. There is no way that McIntosh cannot possibly know this. Both the protagonist and the 40-year feminist icon were subjected to this sexist depiction, but I guess that's okay as long as it was done to highlight toxic masculinity? Astounding. If you have to sacrifice the very ideals you are fighting for to make your point, perhaps it's time to reconsider that point.

Is the movie portraying the female characters as pure virgin goddesses? Or is it about toxic masculinity? Or is it about the unhealthy loyalty of soldiers to petty and domineering authority figures (holdo)? It can be any of those things. Imo it's obviously not to intended to be the last one, but given that Po was literally right... well you know.

Ok, thought experiment. We have 3 pairs of characters: Poe + Holdo, Fin + Rose, Rey + Luke Let's gender-bend this characters and see what will happen. Female-Poe + Male-Holdo. In this pair male-Holdo's behavior could be considered as sexist by McIntosh, Williams and others. ":Look, Poe is best pilot(ess) of Resistence, but this musculine manspreading admiral underrates her just because Poe is a female, not male". Female-Fin + Male-Rose. Same as pair #1, but also because of the scene whene Rose knocks out Fin with taser male-Rose could be considered as violent, abusive and (possibly) as a rapist. Male-Rey + Female-Luke. Already in TFA, male-Ray would be called the exemplar of stupid power fantasy for young white males (especially if Kaylo was female from the beginning). In TLJ what male-Rey do with female-Luke on "sacred island" may be called as harrasment and manspreading with an act of violence right before male-Rey leaves to meet with Kaylo. Of course, it's all hyperbolization, more or less, but it's clear that if we change genders of this characters it may not affect how their stories goes, but at some point the whole contexts of theirs interractions may also be reversed if we assume that the gender of these characters matters. But if we look, for example, at the actions of Holdo, regardless of whether it's a female or male character, we still can say thay this character is really incompetent as senior officer of the fleet. I think it would be fair to say that opinion of a particular character of TLJ is highly dependent on the viewer's or critic's agenda. For McIntosh Holdo is a positive character because she is a woman and not as a result of evaluating her actions without regard to her gender.

I mean was it better to fight and battle at Edoras? Helms deep was known to be a great refuge to the people of Rohan. Had Saruman not made the bombs, helms deep wouldn't have fallen. Note how it took dozens of Uruk-Hai to attack a small fortress all of them would be busy trying to take their turns to go up the ladders along side charge the gates on a narrow pathway. Helms deep wasn't a defeat during the early and mid fights, note how they were entirely there to fight and hold the enemy until Gandalf arrives with help. Going to Helms deep wasn't a bad choice. If there was any other good choice please I'm more than welcome to hear it. Gondor can not send aid. Their spread out on all fronts against mordor. Rohan is on their own and that the other lands of Rohan is busy defending their lands and or preparing for war. Only other army out on the field is Eomer's exiled army. They turned defeat into a victory. Saruman lost even with great preparations.

Finn was never enlisted into any official military branch of “The Republic” nor did he ever volunteer to join the militia-like faction calling themselves “The Resistance.” When Rose forcefully prevents Finn from leaving by tasing him she’s assaulting him, kidnapping him, & coercing him to join a military faction against his will. In all likelihood Rose has good intentions as we can see that she firmly believes that her faction is “doing the right thing,” but she is clearly not a good person as her actions are evidently authoritarian, manipulative, & violent. Later on in the film during the military conflict on Crait between The First Order and The Resistance Rose elects to sabotage Finn’s attempt to neutralize the Super-Laser mobile cannon by crashing her own speeder into Finn’s speeder. Again we can clearly see the good intentions behind Rose’s actions as this maneuver did preserve Finn’s life, however it also doomed the remnants of The Resistance to certain death. Directly following this moment, when Finn asks her why she prevented him from saving the remnants of The Resistance she justifies her actions with an illogical philosophical statement about prioritizing “saving what we love, not killing what we hate.” Directly following this statement she kisses Finn without his consent while he is distracted by the explosive destruction of The Resistance’s defensive structures. The way Rose’s character interacts and affects the story around her is analogous to how a stick that has been inserted into the spokes on the wheel of a moving bicycle affects the rider of that bicycle. Rose has not demonstrated intentional evil intent, but her inability to set aside her emotional desires during military conflict makes her an obvious and extremely massive liability to the entire “Resistance” war effort. When the fate of The Free Galaxy supposedly depends upon the continued existence of “The Resistance” war effort against The First Order, level-headedness and rationality must supersede irrational and emotional behavior.

44:30 Perfectly legitimate point and not sexist at all. At the hospital I work at, we sometimes get...unsafe patients. People detoxing from various substances, the violently mentally ill, people with severe brain injury that causes them to have a warped view of reality, etc. There are also more inoccuous things like dementia, suicide watch, and moderate confusion. In those cases, for the safety of the patient and staff, we have to put an observer in the room. If the patient is violent or unstable, especially if they're male, the order will *very* specifically call for a male observer. It's not sexist to realize that a deranged, 6'2" 220lb drug addict going through withdrawals can NOT be handled by a 5'4" 135lb twenty-something girl. To try to force such a situation in favor of diversity and equality puts the patient, the observer, and potentially anyone nearby at great risk. I would imagine the same goes for guards in male prisons, high-risk unarmed security, and other professions. We're a sexually dimorphic species and women, on average, are weaker than men. wait why do people site boromir as a instance of self sacrifice? He didnt go in guns blazing hoping to die for a cause and redeem himself through his death. He went into combat to protect Merry and Pippin and was actually doing fairly well for himself at first, hoping that this act of protection and overcoming his weakness to the ring might redeem him in his companion's eyes and allow him to continue. Even then, when he realized he was being overwhelmed he didnt shout for the hobbits to simply retreat while he stands against waves of uruks until his inevitable demise. He blows the horn of gondor, calling for aid from th others fully expecting to be able to fight everyone off if they can get there in time to help. It isnt until Lurtz pulls out his bow and shoots him that he even begins to waver, and from that point it isnt self sacrifice as much as it is a final stand as you're not ging to be able to just retreat with an arrow lodged in your chest and infantry charging you and the friends you are protecting down. Even then he survived two more arrows until finally dying to bloodloss where as if the party had arrived sooner the hobbits likely would have been saved and maybe he would have been alive. As dark and heroic of a moment that may have been, it wasnt one of self sacrifice as much as it was of determination being overwhelmed. Sorry might be...looking too far into a random moment just wanted to point that out....but to connect it back to the theme of the arguments, this scene would have had the same effect no matter boromir's gender or race

Man, I actually subscribed briefly to Pop Culture Detective after his video on Fantastic Beasts. I honestly enjoyed it and thought it had some good insights. But I could barely get through two or three of his other videos before realizing that one was a fluke, and immediately unsubscribed. He seems to have a really twisted agenda that he pushes in almost every single video. Male action heroes that aren't physically powerful: Harry Potter, Newt Scamander, Bilbo Baggins, any other hobbit, Mouse (Mathew Broderick in Lady Hawk), Marty McFly, Willow, Hiccup (How to Train Your Dragon), Sam Witwicky, Abraham VanHellsing, the Doctor (Doctor Who), Hiro Hamada (Big Hero 6), Sherlock Holmes (in most of his depictions), etc. (I'm sure I could name more). The Death Star (at least according to material that Disney made non-canon), is staffed by more than 1.7 billion military personnel, and nearly twice that many non-military crew, technicians, etc. You know it's come out that J.J. Abrams in his early drafts had Finn as the main protagonist of the Force Awakens. Kathleen Kennedy told him she wanted a female protagonist, and he agreed to create Rey in exchange for permission to make the villain (Snoke) Darth Plagueis (to be revealed in the second movie). If you're going to have a giant opulent casino with underground races populated by the rich elite of the galaxy, why not have it on Coruscant? On the subject of Thanos, many of the best villains are the heroes of their own stories. Arkham Asylum has had a varied portrayal over the years, but it's always been a place where there is genuine interest in helping the patients there. There have also often been people subverting that effort. In the Arkham games, for instance, the founder of the asylum was shown to have very sinister intentions, and if I recall correctly, he may have even become paranoid and unstable over the years. Also, his analysis of the statistics of Thanos plan touches only on the math, not the social/economic factors of the plan. Yes, his plan is still flawed, but there are studies which have shown that population growth plateaus based on technological advances and lifestyle changes, not total numbers. So in theory, the human population of earth has already started slowing, and if it were suddenly halved, it would take significantly longer to recover than it took us to get here from half of what we have now. But that theory does also ignore how populations respond to catastrophes like world wars, major natural disasters, or space terrorists killing half of all life.

McIntosh on Twitter back in July, for more context on where he sees Luke's character after XI, leading into the sequel trilogy: "A handful of The Last Jedi haters in my mentions are offering up a fascinating misreading of the final showdown between Luke and Vader in RotJ. I think it's worth taking a moment to discuss because it may help explain why these guys hate Luke’s character so much in Episode VIII (Pictured: GIF of the milk-chugging scene from TLJ) The misreading: Luke Skywalker uses his great warrior skills to defeat Darth Vader. Once he’s proven himself in combat and stands victorious, Luke does the honorable thing by showing mercy and sparing his enemy. Thereby saving himself from corruption and redeeming his father (Pictured: GIF of Luke saying "You're gravely mistaken") What really happened: Luke tries to avoid fighting but gives into anger. As he bests Vader in combat, Luke realizes his great mistake, winning this fight means losing his soul to the Dark Side. The battle itself is corrupting him, understanding this Luke throws away his weapon (Pictured: GIF of Luke looking at his robotic hand and back to his father in horror) Notice that the misreading (above) reframes Luke as a badass warrior and reframes his refusal to kill Vader as an act of mercy stemming from a position of power. This is significant because Luke beating Vader in combat is explicitly depicted as a moment of weakness NOT strength. (Pictured: Continuation of the GIF from the last tweet) The desire of some fans to re-imagine Luke as a powerful warrior who spares the bad guy out of benevolence is consistent with the way male heroes are often represented. It’s the way Batman is framed when he doesn't kill The Joker. But Luke Skywalker isn’t the typical action hero. (Pictured: GIF of Christian Bale's Batman threatening a mugger) Luke’s arc in the original trilogy ends with him not only refusing to kill the bad guy, but refusing to even fight a worse villain. This is why Luke’s force projection standoff with Kylo in The Last Jedi is so perfect. It's the ultimate expression of everything Luke has learned. (Pictured: GIF of Luke tossing the lightsaber in TLJ) The fact that an iconic figure like Luke Skywalker was explicitly framed as *weak* for fighting a murderous villain like Darth Vader is a pretty subversive message, especially for a male hero in Hollywood. And it’s something that, 35 years later, some fans still refuse to accept. (Pictured: GIF of Luke reclined against a tree, looking at the force ghosts of Ben Kenobi, Yoda and his father)." Rian Johnson himself remarked that he found this analysis illuminating, with McIntosh saying that he's considering printing out and framing Johnson's tweet of approval.

As for the mental illness thing, he's talking about the tendency of comics and comic properties to make a villain's motivation be nothing more than "he's mentally ill." In the comics, Thanos' moniker is "The Mad Titan." So Mikey is saying that when he brings up Thanos' plan being unfeasible and evil, people respond to him with "So what? He's crazy!" Which Mikey is saying gives the mentally ill a bad name. He's more ranting at this point than anything else, because you're right, Thanos isn't crazy in the movie. In the comics, his motivation isn't about conservation of resources. In the comics his motivation is that he's in love with the personification of death, and he wants to wipe out half the universe to impress her. Which is undeniably batshit. Speaking of batshit, Batman. Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane does, in theory, work to rehabilitate its inhabitants, but it's as corrupt and inept as the rest of Gotham is. That's why villains are constantly escaping. But there are doctors that work with the patients. I'm positive you even know one. Harley Quinn's origin is that she was a shrink working at Arkham that was assigned to work with the Joker. She ends up falling in love with him and helping him escape. Harley Quinn has been ruined in this day and age, because when she was created, she was a really interesting and tragic villain. She was completely devoted to the Joker, committing crimes and murder for him. He would sweet talk and seduce her, and be horribly abusive at the drop of a hat. That she was supposedly intelligent (that she was a shrink is pretty much never mentioned these days), yet still fell for this monster was interesting. That she was terribly abused, but was a monster in her own right was interesting. But as her popularity grew, people didn't like seeing such a fun, perky character getting smacked around. So her murderous past was ignored, and they turned her into a quirky anti-hero. Now she's just a kooky chick in a corset with a giant hammer. Anything complex about her has been removed. Sorry, that was my own little rant there. The point that I was making before I got side tracked was that Arkham Asylum tries to cure the inmates in theory. But the villains never really stay imprisoned long enough to make an impact. And if they do, villainous psychiatrists like Hugo Strange, Jeremiah Arkham, and Scarecrow tend to have control of the Asylum at any given time. Mikey does have a point that lazy writers, especially of Batman books, tend to use the "He's crazy" excuse for why villains do the things they do. Joker, Scarecrow, Two-face, Riddler, Mad Hatter, Firefly, Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange, Ventriloquist, and Victor Zsasz to name some of his more prominent rogues all have a diagnosis of one or more mental illnesses that are said to be the root of their criminal exploits. One series tried to make the case that Joker has a sensory disorder that leads to him experiencing every sensation all at once, leading to his insanity and psychopathy. Now, seeing as how Sensory Processing Disorder actually exists, and that I actually have it, I find that explanation for Joker's evil to be pretty fucked up and insulting. But it's really got nothing to do with Thanos. People need to stop using mental illness as a handwave excuse for villainy, but that wasn't done in Infinity War.

The thing with Thanos that Mikey says the movie is saying isn't that "Abuse = Love" or that "Bad people can't love other people." His objection is that Thanos was horrifically abusive to both Gamora and Nebula, but the movie confirms that he truly loved Gamora. Mikey's stance is that if you intentionally torture someone, you don't love them. You might might think that you love them, but you don't. Furthermore, he thinks it's dangerous to say to children that might be victims of abuse that the person abusing them really does love them. Personally, I'm with you. People are morally complicated. Bad people can care about and even love the people that they hurt. But I can see things from Mikey's perspective even if I don't agree.

Also his comments on starlord make me wonder if he watched the film and I wasn't alone on that one apparently but I appreciate the point you made and I understand the crazy comments but I really didn't think Thanos was sold as crazy in the film. They don't refer to him as the Mad Titan. The video is a mess. I've watched several of his other videos and actually gotten something from them in the past, though I don't agree with him when it comes Last Jedi. Maybe try one of his reviews on something besides Marvel or Star Wars? I think I remember his video on John Wick actually being ok. To his credit, he did reiterate throughout the video that it was a good movie, and that this was just his reaction. I honestly don't think he was claiming any absolutes, but he was so worked up he couldn't keep the "just my take" vibe going consistently. He wavered between "This is awful and shouldn't have been allowed" and "can we just be a little mindful please?" I think being mindful would be good, but also tend to think that the movie WAS mindful of such things.

@@DrLipkin fact. And again from experience, seeing a film say, "hurting people means you don't love them" is not convincing at all when you live with an abuser.

Regarding not expecting a woman to call out a man for cowardice, that was a HUGE thing in the 19th and early 20th century, where women went around shaming men for not enlisting in the military. They've written stories and made movies about it.

2:02:00 Didn’t they actually give a heroic sacrifice to Roses sister at the start of the Last Jedi.... *shakes head* when will these guys actually use the film they are “defending” to actually make proper arguments for this shit show of a film

Holdo and Paige Tico both got heroic sacrifices. Finn was technically following the lead of the women around him.

it's only an heroic sacrifice when it's done by a woman, if it's man, it's toxic masculinity. Macintosh is very inconsistent.
