The one thing i'd mention is that average temperature probably changes with elevation (along with location). If you could make a control by experimenting with the temperature, we could see if altitude's pressure, it's temperature, or a combination of the two is what affects the reaction

First i thought many factors not taken into consideration(temperature, loss of co² due to prior shaking and other factors) . Later said if all intial factors would be same..tha pressures, but there's also density of the air..would proof same results.

I kept the temperature constant in all these trials...heated bottles with my body when necessary. I also used bottles from the same four 6 packs, and all had the same expiration date. I did the best I could to keep the shaking to a minimum, but this definitely was difficult to control

That is interesting, as far as qualitative measure goes, but the findings are not robust at all, because there was no variable control. The Volume(V) of an ideal gas (which can be used to describe air) is dependent on the pressure(p),which is itself dependent on hight via the barometric hight formula: p(dh) = p(0)exp(-dhMg/RT), the temperature(T) and the amount of particles(n): V = nRT/p For a quantitative measure one needs to controle or correct for at least those variables, otherwise the measurement is useless.

This is correct for the ambient air. The pressure inside the bottle, and therefore the amount of CO2 dissolved, is controlled by controlling the the temperature of these bottles...and using bottles purchased at the same store with the same expiration date. Could there possibly be a third variable; movement from the hikes, humidity, age of mentos/coke etc. ? Just curious because the experiment was very interesting. Thank you.

Great questions! We controlled for the age of coke by using cokes all purchases at the same store with the same expiration date. I have checked age of mentos in other experiments and this doesn't seem to have an effect. Agitation of bottles definitely plays a role, so we tried to handle bottles gently and in a similar fashion prior to experimenting. I haven't noticed humidity playing a role, but you never know...

I did a test as a kid and found that temperature affects the strength of the reaction, so your results may be related to that. if you didn't already control for temperature, it may be worth redoing it

Surly temperature has a lot more to do with it than altitude, as the solubility of gases decreases as temperature increases meaning there would be less bubbles and colder temperatures. ... If not a lot more to do with then it definitely plays a part, would need to see a graphs of temp vs altitude and compare.

The fact that the reaction works better at higher altitude is likely a kinetic effect. Bubbles form and grow more quickly in carbonated beverages when the atmospheric pressure drops. See: Liger-Belair, G.; Parmentier, M.; Jeandet, P. Modeling the Kinetics of Bubble Nucleation in Champagne and Carbonated Beverages. J. Phys. Chem. B 2006, 110, 21145−21151.

The problem with this experiment is that not ever bottle comes with the EXACT same amount of carbon dioxide in it and not all mentos have the same amount of stuff in it that makes the soda foam in every one either, so your results will very regardless of the altitude or air pressure, so while yes it does indeed work better at higher altitudes like 2-4 bottles should’ve been done at each area to get a more definitive answer and graph, yours is more vague but still in the general hall park

I also feel that temperature would be a key factor, with the gas expanding with a higher temperature Of course, higher altitudes usually have lower temperatures so if anything, this shows that air pressure may be a more crucial factor than temperature 🤔
