In the name of Allah (God),
This is an incident that took place at one of our outreach stations in Vancouver BC. On a weekly basis, some of our team members set up a "Meet a Muslim" booths to bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims, and share information on Islam. We welcome all questions and conversations and look forward to introducing Islam and wealth of intellectual and spiritual traditions it contains. We also look forward to opportunities where we can dispel misconceptions about Islam people may have due to lack of information. We distribute free Quran translation copies as well as other literature.
On Sunday, December 27, in downtown Vancouver, a lady walked up to our team and started abusing, swearing and harassing the team as well as some bypassers. We thank our team for displaying patience in the face of bigotry and we also thank a kind couple that stopped by and offered assistance. We had to contact the Vancouver Police Department to ensure the safety of our team and property.
We are sharing this video to highlight the following:
1. Unity and Co-Existence cannot be achieved with ignorance. Education is a key factor in ensuring we develop strong communities and eradicate bigotry.
2. Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim bigotry is real and impacts many people in various forms.
3. There is a general lack of understanding of Islam and we need to take up ambitious steps in educating people
4. Muslims must take up the responsibility of sharing Islam with the wider community with confidence and compassion while being true their identities.
5. Non-Muslims also have a responsibility in ensuring our future generations grow up in a society grounded in knowledge and where Islamophobia and bigotry of all forms is absent.
Anyone wanting to learn more about Islam can get in touch with us at meetamuslim.ca where one of our team members can talk to you over email/phone/video call. We can also share copies of the Quran and other literature on Islam for free all across BC.
Also, please visit our newly launched Facebook page where we will continue to build bridges and answer questions in Islam: / meetamuslim
Also, we want to make a point that we appreciate the warm and welcoming response we receive on a weekly basis from the community of Vancouver, and that this person is not a representation of Vancouver and majority of its people.
