Just got back from a 22 day trip. So much being said about traveling to Egypt is BS. I appreciate this video as it is more positive.. Summary: People are exceptionally friendly to Americans. We felt the love and VIP treatment everywhere we went. Cairo, luxor, aswan and Alexandria. Massive police presence so we always felt safe. People might hustle you but no one will pickpocket you, or threaten you in any way. Everyone we met went out of their way to make us comfortable. The most important thing is that their culture relies on bak·sheesh(tipping). There is a tip for everything but it is OK and we were happy to do it. The amount of tip 20 to 50 EGP for most things. The USD is 30 to 1 so a 50 Pound tip is about 1.6 US. There are many Nubians that guard the tombs. Very poor and the tips are a big help to them. Tipping most often results in them taking you into special areas, or showing you unique things at the sites. So worth it!!! I think the total tipping was no more than 70USD for the whole trip. Be kind enjoying the tipping and you will be surprised how much love the people show back , ALWAYS deal in EGP not USD...Lastly, user UBER in Cairo and Alexandria. So cheap. you don't need to negotiate with the drivers and I always double the fare as a tip because it was so cheap. We used it on 11 rides my UBER bill total was less than 5 USD for the whole vacation!!!!!

You Must have went on a group tour. I did two days in Cairo, and three days in Luxor. Cairo wasn’t that bad, but Luxor was a major pain in the ass. If you’re solo, it can be a nightmare because they will sit there and try to rip you off at any chance they get. And they hound you once you come outside your hotel. The whole country is basically a scam. I hate to say it and I’ve been to Egypt twice. I’ll never go back. They treat tourists like shit. I had a couple that I sat next to at Luxor airport the husband got locked up for five days for just bringing in Israeli currency. It’s a complete shit show when it comes to governmental relations they just make it up as they go.
@steve334
Жыл бұрын
And when it comes to baksheesh, they’ll sit there and complain if you tip them in EGP. Got in the too many arguments because their currency is trash.

@@steve334 Sounds like a very different experience. We were not with a group for the first 3 days in Luxor. There was my wife and an additional couple.We did all the bookings ourselves. On the 4 the day we had a guide assigned from our cruise for just us 4. No doubt, it was easier with him, but we did manage on our own. We booked a tour ( balloon, Tombs of Nobles and Valley of the kings on our own. We just hired a driver. He was OK, although could seem a little impatient. We caught on quickly to just buy our own tickets instead of letting him do it. We didn't tip in USD at all. Most were grateful, only one guard asked for a little more and we were happy to give him and extra 50EGP. Many of the educated locals shared their feelings about the government. One can see how the country could improve with better policies. This sentiment was common from Aswan to Alexandria. I can see how people could feel put off by the tipping. It pisses me off here in the US. But I can also see just how desperate so many are. What seemed to us as a small gesture, seemed to really be appreciated. This was especially true at the Tombs of the Nobles. You can tell these people are really impoverished. The Police were really kind to us and strangely waived us through many checkpoints,( not sure why) In Alexandria, things were even more interesting. At the Catacombes, A police officer gave me his tea that was just delivered with his breakfast. I appreciated the kind gesture and thanked him ( He was not looking for and I did not tip). At the Pillar of Pompe, One police officer observed my friend looking into a passage at the top and approached us and gave us an personal tour under the Pillar. Opened a bunch of gates and showed us some really cool things. We did tip him 200 egp for the experience.( seemed fair) One observation was how people were treated depended on how they were dressed. Our wives, dresses conservatively ( no head cover) but respectfully. We saw many "insta girls" who were dresses provocatively by Egyptian standards. You could see they were not well received anywhere. We tried to be kind an gracious to everyone, shook a lot of hands. I only speak a few Egyptian words, but I did have a translator on my phone that allowed me to share some kind words with our Uber drivers ( These guys were the best in the world) I'm sure you can appreciate the skills. I'm sure your experiences there are common and on point for many visiting. We are just normal people who love exploring. We were not trying to make videos, social posts, or stand out. People were interested in talking and joking with us. We were blessed to have some great guides (luxor Awsan Tours) No doubt, it could have gone a different way. Thanks for responding to my post.I appreciate your perspective!

The best time to go to Egypt is from November 11 to 3. The weather in Egypt is warm and beautiful. As for the tourist places, Luxor and Aswan, in my opinion, are better than Cairo, because they contain amazing things, and Siwa in the Western Desert. You should not miss Siwa and Safari.Also, white sand with camping and watching the Milky Way sparkling in the sky of Egypt, oh, it is incredibly beautiful, and going to Sinai such as Marsa Alam, Hurghada, or Dahab, any city overlooking the Red Sea, is wonderful, and also the northern coast With its picturesque turquoise waters and snow-white sand, you can also visit the city of Fayoum, but Cairo can also be visited for 10 years because the government is working on its development now, but frankly, Cairo is an open museum and has archaeological sites.But with a lot of crowding and pollution, but its people are very beautiful and kind, and a wonderful city, but if you organize and put laws, this is what the country is doing now, but New Cairo is also very beautiful

I am from Egypt, and I agree with you. I think they do this because they are ignorant. When I see someone beat the donkey, I Curse him but this will not solve the problem haha. but there are people who treat animals very well. So the original cause of the problem is the lack of education.

The extra tour to Abu Simbel I would definitely recommend paying the extra for. But fly rather than coach it. Also pop into The Old Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor and The Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan as both are beautiful. Well, they were 30 years ago 😂

The best thing is to get a reputable tour group. There are sites and temples that require 24 hour advance permission from the government, to visit, and your tour group handles those requirements for you. Also, try to handle the people ; trying to sell you things; with a sense of humor and learn to say, " La Shukran" ( no, thank you) or if someone won't leave you alone, "Kallas" (I'm through talking).

After visiting twice I do recommend using a good, local, Egyptian travel agency even if it is in combination with solo travel. Read reviews and ask your hotel for who they recommend. Study up on the history as that will make visiting sites far more meaningful to you and learn the local norms and work to respect them. I went for ten days or so the first time and a month the second time. For hot weather there is plenty of modern travel clothing that comfortably protects from the sun without dressing like you are in a volley ball tournament.

One thing that might help you in Egypt is how to say "no! thank you" in Arabic. Some Egyptians will try to sell you a whole bunch of souvenirs, and they can be a little too pushy The tone of this "no thank you" while being firm must remain respectful, in the spirit of: "thank you for offering this to me but no thank you I don't need it"

went there 12 years ago- it was our 2nd best trip yet. Cairo is absolutely fllthy, the air is so bad we were in tears some days from all the smoke from burning trash. It's just plain filthy. But we walked everywhere in Cairo without a worry, had a good time at the outdoor bazaar. The best part was a week on the Nile by boat. The sphinx was so crowded with souvenir vendors you couldn't hardly walk on the seps. We were afraid to eat alot of the native food because we saw so much fresh meat, etc without refrigeration. The old Cairo muesem has been upgraded with new lighting. I think the British muesem in London was better. Get a good package and hope for a good guide, ours was great. tay at a luxury hote, you'll be glad you did.

The seller responded Ah, Australians, hello. We bought something off him, laughing all the way, we figured with that response, he’d earned it. Very informative video… will be going to Egypt in a week. Thank you for this video… just wish you would have mentioned to please NOT ride the horses or camels as they are terribly overworked and abused.
