Time for Egyptian mythology - time for the Ennead. The story of Amun Ra and his offspring: Shu, Tefnut, Osiris, Nephtys, Set and Isis... they all feature in this incestuous and violent tale that makes every other mythology's family matters look cute.
Notes:
I couldn''t really find a way to meaningfully include Anubis in this video, so I will add him here in the notes...
Anubis was more than just the son Osiris had with his sister Nephtys. Anubis was Egyptian Mythology's conductor of souls.
Anubis would fetch the dead souls and bring them into the underworld. That’s also why he is depicted as a black jackal: Jackals would often dig up bodies at cemeteries, much like Anubis did with the soul when he brought it to be judged.
Souls were judged by their being weighed on a scale against the feather of truth. If the heart was heavier than the feather… tough luck, it was eaten by the beast Ammit and you were dead for real. There is no hell in Egyptian Mythology, no eternal torture, the punishment is just death.
Bye.
If the feather was heavier than your heart, it meant you were pure, but Osiris would be the last judge by asking you questions and checking your browser history to see if you’re really good enough for the heavenly realm of ancient Egypt: A field of reeds where your soul gets to live on.
On Ra's name:
Ra was also know as Atum, or Atum Ra - not to be confused with Amun and Amun Ra.
The topic of Atum and Ra is difficult. I chose to treat them as the same deity. Some say they are distinct, some say Atum was Ra’s human form... and all of this equally makes the matter of the eye of Ra difficult - sometimes it’s equal to the eye of Atum, sometimes the eye of Ra is equated to the sun while the eye of Atum is the moon, but this is not that simple because the eye of Horus is also related to the moon, aaaaand to make this more complex, Sekhmet/Bastet is not the only deity born out of the eye of Ra(-Atum).
Due to the different eras of Egypt (new kingdom and old kingdom) worshipping the deities differently, Egyptian mythology is a hot mess when you try to force it into one coherent storyline. Because… Ra and Atum are not the only gods in Egyptian mythology that overlap and share one similarity too many. The story of Horus, for example, is not as clear cut as I made it seem, nor is Osiris always the father of Anubis, so to make a long story longer…:
If you want to know the different variations and intricacies of Egyptian mythology, I highly encourage an independent deep dive.
