These filters are amazing, I have three after all my Fluvals '06 series leaking within 3 years of each other. Their almost silent and the wet dry prefilter is perfect for removing solid waste, their also really easy to clean. They might be expensive but well worth every penny.

I’m confused about you swapping the mesh filter from the 2nd chamber to the top of the third due to water flowing up, but at the beginning you said it flows down.
@AaronsAquarium

It flows down a pipe in the corner to the bottom then comes back up through the Media.

Eheim used to make really good quality filters, unfortunately they’ve used crappy materials when making the new pro series. They’re still good but just not as good as they used to be.

The logic about moving the fine particle filter down a layer demonstrates a misconception about the design of the filter. What we need to understand is that when this filter is working as intended, a 1” void area below the bottom basket collects the majority of the waste that is not trapped by the first large particle filter. The water then gently rises up to the lower basket with the bits of tubing that diffuse the flow of the water and prevents channeling or jet streaming. The fine particle filter is intended to sit above the biomaterial to prevent large chunk of dead bacteria from escaping the filter chamber back into the aquarium. Think of it like your body. If the bacteria in your digestive system is working in balance with the food you ingest, then the only thing that leaves your body is dead bacteria. Everything else becomes nutrients utilized by the system.

I’ve just done something similar with a new nano build I’m doing but replaced the media with biohome. Bottom section is just 3 layers of filter floss and top layer is carbon and rowaphos.

What media are you going to use in the super simple reef build for your filter. I'm setting up a 125gallon saltwater tank using a fluval fx4 filter. And I'm not sure what I should use as media. And some people said not to use sponge's as they're nitrate factories. Any advice?
@AaronsAquarium

I'm using everything that came with the filter, nothing more. Canister filters are Nitrate factories if they are not maintained. Clean them regularly and they are fine

Im gona make a video soon on how to make a nitrate reactor fx6 and fx4 filters however i have no idea how effective it is since i just set it up and it takes months before you can see results. 99.9% of the time on a reef tank this size a sump is better. You should of thought of this question before u purchesd the fx4
