Wish Week for Elizabeth School District kicked off Friday with a visit from a princess as precious as anything dreamed up by Disney.
Khloe and Adam Haney brought their three-year-old daughter Karina (and her two siblings) to Elizabeth High School for the kickoff assembly for the second-annual, district-wide Make-A-Wish fundraiser.
The EHS Student Council, under the guidance of teachers Summer Katzoff and Robyn Poirier, organized a week’s worth of restaurant events, theme days, t-shirt and swag-bag sales, two assemblies, school-day events, and a princess-themed dance on Feb. 10 - all with the goal of raising $12,000 for Make-A-Wish.
Karina’s wish is to go to DisneyWorld and see Mickey Mouse and her favorite princess, Moana, along with all the other princesses. Her favorite things include: the color purple, her Watermelon book, mac and cheese, strawberry cake, healthy snacks, “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles 2,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Paw Patrol,” mermaids, playing with baby dolls, her siblings, Mickey, and all things Disney!
The various theme days next week will be all about her favorites.
StuCo Vice President Lily Settoon said Wish Week has been in the planning phases with several committees working for months, including making contact with the Haney family in December.
Karina’s parents said her condition, severe aplastic anemia, is a rare bone-marrow-failure blood disease which affects one or two people out of a million. The disease is similar to leukemia and is an inability of the body to make blood cells. Early on, Karina spent days at a time at Children’s Hospital receiving platelets and blood transfusions.
Adam said hospitals are always low on platelets, and the couple encourages anyone who can to donate platelets when they give blood (Coloradans can go to Vitalant.org to find out how to donate).
The only cure for Karina’s condition is a bone marrow transplant, but neither of her siblings or any other relatives were a match. Fortunately, the international registry of bone marrow donors did identify 10 matches, so if other treatments currently under way do not keep Karina in remission, she will be able to receive a transplant. The Haneys also strongly encourage anyone 18-40 to go to NMDP.org, to order a simple mouth-swab kit to be entered into the bone-marrow registry and make it possible to save the life of someone like Karina.
And for anyone who wants to join with Elizabeth Schools - each of which will have their own theme days and fundraisers - check out the EHS_WishWeek24 Instagram account.
