You describe a great book as causing a paradigm shift... I see it as a great book awakens us to a field, in the scientific sense of the word. Just like there is the gravitational field all around us, or a Higgs Boson field that is everywhere and permeates everything, there is a Van Gogh field, a Nabakov field, an Aurelius field all around us... and when we read a great book it opens our eyes to one new field that touches everything and runs through it all. The more you read, the more fields you can see.

Alan Watts will forever be my favorite human being. I think I own like 9 of his books. My favorite is either Nature, Man and Woman or Psychotherapy East & West. I discovered him by accident years ago. KZitem suggested one of his recordings to me, kind of like how KZitem suggested your video to me. I was big into psychedelics at the time, however. So his writing became the background for every trip. Whenever I’d trip with friends I’d bring one of his books with me or turn on his lectures and listen to them while tripping. 👌 existence is weird mate haha

Watts' interpretation of Eastern ideas is essential for those in the west (especially those who had a Christian upbringing) seeking to understand concepts of the self in Hinduism and Buddhism ("Hinduism for export" as he would say). Yea, I try to show Marx's economic texts after I show the Manifesto. What I'm getting at in that is that The Communist Manifesto is a political text that does speak about to economy, simply by the nature of communism. I would not consider Henry Hazlitt's book relevant for learning economics any more. It's a testament to how good of a youtuer you are that you put in this much work into a 'List of books' video that 99% of people would've just made into a video where they just talked into a webcam. No wonder I love to see new vids from you in my sub page. And 5:00 reminded me a lot of Frank Zappa's rant about 'Death by Nostalgia', for some reason. " It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice -- there are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia. When you compute the length of time between 'The Event' and 'Nostalgia For The Event,' the span seems to be about 'a year less in each cycle.' Eventually, within the next quarter of a century the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took. At that point, everything stops. Death by Nostalgia."

This is the first time I've felt compelled to comment on a video. I think you're a force for good. If you're able to, you should continue creating content as you're having a profound lasting meaning on peoples lives. I've experienced a paradigm shift from watching your videos. Thank you for creating.

Thank you so much. Paradigm shifts for good is the central motivation for the channel, so your comment means a lot. I'll be back.

Thank you very much for the book list! You are the best! I have one question: How do you register the books that you have read (journal, pc, bookreads...)?
@schodes
5 жыл бұрын
No problem! Glad you found the list helpful! I don't register them (though I should). I own all my books, so I can usually look at it on the shelf and know whether I've read it or not. I have a lot of book notes, so that obviously helps me know what I've read and what I haven't.

Mediocre video.Alan watts wasn't an alcoholic? Action speak louder than words

I kind of agree with this, but you’re underselling the effect words can have on a person regardless of their writer. I credit DFW with saving me from a terrible place even though he couldn’t do it himself. Same goes for Watts. Thanks for the comment!

Great list Will. I have some reading to do. Wondering if you have read "Mans Search for Meaning" by Victor E. Frankl? It's pretty heavy, but it completely changed the way I saw myself in the the world.

Yea that's a classic! Frankl is great.

Sorry for all the hate you're getting. Not sure how you can be "wrong" for sharing books that matter to you... Regardless, thank you for posting. I look forward to reading these!!

I think relative to the rest of KZitem, the hate here is pretty nonexistent. Just some strong criticism about one of the books (the economics one). And of course, glad that you enjoyed the video and let me know what you think of the books you end up reading!

Thinking fast and slow was great. I would also recommend you predictably irrational and honest truth about dishonesty by Don Ariel. I will be reading other books that you mentioned. Great choices. I am interested. ps: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie also was a great book that changed me from person that constantly argues with people to a person that tries to understand people better.
