I suppose you’re referring to the first beat. It is a 12-pulse asymmetric timeline pattern played by many cultures in the Guinea coast area and carried to the New World during the slave trade. [x - x - x x - x - x - x] The ‘x’ characters represent the audible strokes/beats/notes of the pattern. The pattern is asymmetric because the strokes of the first six pulses are different to the strokes of the last six pulses. The pattern is played in the form of repeating cycle and usually in traditional religious music in Brazil, Cuba and Guinea coast area.
