Ian grew up close to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and from his early years wanted to be a pilot. It took three attempts to get into the RAF and then another four years before he was accepted for pilot training. Ian served in the RF for many years both as a pilot and also training others to fly.
On one occasion on a training flight in Buckden Pike, Yorkshire, an aircraft failure of his Phantom FGR2 travelling at 600mph at only 250 feet above the ground led to him ejecting with just 5 seconds to spare. At that time, it was the lowest and fastest ejection in the history of the RAF. Miraculously they both survived, and Ian was flying again within 9 months.
Join Roger Carswell in conversation with Ian as he share about that eventful day and all that happened afterwards.
